That accident in Wellington also caused lots of downstream delays.

I had a colleague waiting to fly WLG to ALK - Flights were being delayed as aircrew were stuck in the traffic. This casues further issues in Auckland as those crew were needed for onward domestic flights as well.

Not saying they don't need to investigate, but getting the backlog moving should be just as important.

Could be a useful application for technologies that allow details of an accident scene to be captured rapidly in an approriate resolution.  Perhaps lidar and hi-res drone photography could create a digital twin of the scene, including vehicle and occupant final positions and condition. Obviously, that won't get investigators to scene any faster.  Helicopters could speed up scene access, though.

They already use similar technologies. Still takes time.

I got stuck in the northbound traffic for that one. I think it was a good 45 minute delay, all for rubber-necking. Traffic sped up to the speed limit as soon as we passed the crash.

so bloody annoying, but I guess you’re never going to stop it.

I confess that I had nothing but a faint memory of it being ticketable in Quebec in the 70's.
Certainly other drivers made it clear that you were pissing them off ;-)

So I asked AI - and was pointed towards two jurisdictions that endeavour to 'stop it'.

The UAE has a Dh 1000 fine specifically for it and California targets it with various traffic-obstruction / careless driving violations.

The UAE one is never enforced
