I am getting up different numbers for boot sizes;

AZE0 (1st gen, post mid cycle refresh): 370L (355L if bose stereo fitted)

ZE1 (2nd gen - current shape): 435L (I assume without the bose fitted)

ZE0 (1st gen prior to mid cycle refresh) will be less than the AZEO due to the charger being located in the boot under that plastic.

The ZE1 appears to loose those plastic moldings's protruding in from the sides of the boot, and it visually appears to have a less sloped rear hatch.

jonathan18: I have a feeling you’re not going to want to go with this option, but personally I’d buy an MG HS EV any day over a gen 2 Leaf - in 2022 I’m simply not prepared to put that kind of money into an EV that doesn’t have active battery management (see posts earlier on this page!), and think this is a far bigger issue than the relative merits of a Japanese vs Chinese car.

I was quite fascinated by this when it was raised in another thread. Over the first five years of ownership, I would hazard a guess that this has the potential to impact the annual depreciation cost by $2k relative to other alternatives that can better maintain their battery state over that five year period.

I personally can't see how buying a Leaf is financially viable compared with a Kona electric. From all accounts you'll also get better dealer support from Hyundai than you would get from Nissan.

not now but i bought my leaf in Nov last year for $6k and today i looked the cheapest Leaf in the south island is $15k

swings and roundabouts though coz lose way more money elsewhere (not shares)

From a financially viable stand point I've just done the maths on how much we won't spend on petrol compared to the leaf and how long it will take to recoup the entire ticket price. I've not factored in resale value as that is such a variable that will change and with new EVs hitting the market I suspect will only plummet when the likes of the mg hit the second hand market. I figured one will take 4 years and one will take 2 years to pay themselves off with our mileage, so overall in 3 years when RUC come in we will have paid for them both outright and if they hold any resale value that's a bonus.

Anyone with a JDM import 40kwh G spec from 2019 onwards able to confirm if they are still using Type 1 connectors or Type 2? Internet seems to offer conflicting info.

E: Looks like it's still Type 1 and 3.3kwh chargers are standard issue. Damnit.

Personally, unless the Leaf is especially good for wheelchair access I would advise against it. The '22 MG ZS EV is cheaper than the 40kWh Leaf and has a bigger (LFP) battery with thermal management, and the 60kWh is only about $10K cheaper than a Tesla Model 3 which is way more than $10K better. A second-hand one still makes sense as they so much cheaper, but buying one new in 2022 seems like you'll be wasting your money. They're just not very good, compared to the alternatives now.

I drove a 2022 Leaf and was underwhelmed. They seem to be very highly priced for what they offer. OTOH in the US (CA) pricing is pretty good and makes for a better case

Yes, a 62kWh Leaf for $38K NZ might make sense, but the actual New Zealand prices are ludicrous.

Every single car is similarly cheaper by the same percentage overseas. Not just leaf. Kia EV is about 60k overseas for example

We finally managed to get up close with the Leaf at the Nissan dealer. Nice looking car but when my wife tried my wheelchair in the boot her response was a series of expletives culminating in "oh hell no". I had to agree with here the boot design is not good and if the chair were to be carries in there the lining of the boot would look very second hand in a very quick time.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The MG is a nice vehicle but the boot space is quite constrained. My wife looked at both the Haval H6 PHEV and the EV6 over the weekend. She likes the Haval and it certainly a good sized SUV and would swallow the chair easily. Then she saw the Kia EV6 in black and all was lost. She has fallen in love with it. The one she looked at was in Kapiti was $109,000. Her next suggestion was that I could keep the RAV4 for the chair and bikes and she could have fun in the EV6.

A sad weekend for me, sigh, at least I managed to get the Sonos system I was after.

Methinks you risk the chance of way over-generalising here. Yep, compared to many overseas markets, many models will be more costly in NZ, but certainly not all. It’s also made more difficult by the different range of EV incentives that may be present in certain markets (and vary widely within some countries, eg US) that directly affect actual purchase price vs list price. It also depends very strongly on the country you’re comparing us with.

As an example, check out the price of Teslas in the UK: the three grades of the Model 3 (RD, LR, Performance) are 25%, 25% and 15% more expensive than in NZ (by comparison, the figures vs the US are -1%, 0%, -6%).

But, yeah, I agree the Leaf is stupidly priced here; it would be interesting to hear from Nissan NZ the rationale for its pricing point, given the age of the model and lack of active battery management.

Totally get the falling in love with the aesthetics of the EV6 - similarly, I showed my wife one (in matte grey) on a street in Wellington a couple of weeks back, and she was also keen. If it weren’t for the boot size I’d be keen on ordering the long-range basic model for sure…

Instead, I still wait for the release of the Y… And the longer I have to wait the more bile that drains from Musk’s mouth, hence the more reasons that exist for avoiding buying a Tesla.

I had been looking more closely at the Skoda Enyaq, but range and speed of charging do seem to count against it.

As for the Leaf and wheelchairs - as per my own experience, not at all surprised to find it wasn’t a goer, but totally worth checking in-person.
