Dingbatt:

When I first started this thread, I wondered about DC home charging. The response at the time was “too expensive and not really available”. I stumbled across this YouTube video (well actually I subscribe to his channel) about an Australian home DC car charger. Not cheap, but not out of the question for the person who has everything anyway.

Problem is, there are no/very little vehicles that support it.

??

Basically every vehicle on the market supports DC charging; the Zoe was the only exception I know of.

There's a lot of info in this thread and on the web. Filtering and making sense is not easy! What are the (currently) better options for single phase smart Type 2 chargers please? I'm looking for reliable hardware and reliable (Android) software for control and monitoring, if that's possible.

Cheers and thanks

What ever you buy I recommend dynamic load balancing if your are going to be drawing more than 16A (3KW).

it adapts the power draw down so you don't overload the pole fuse when using lots of other appliances in the house.

Eg of your car I charging at 32A (7KW) that is half the max load for most houses. Running a couple of heat pumps, stove, washer and drier at the same time my be too much.

Dynamic Load Balancing means your car charging speed is slowed while everything is drawing power and comes back up when more power is available.

Hi, doing some internal renovations and so taking opportunity to run a cable from switchboard to garage for a 32a charger. Currently happy with my m3 and 15a plug but thinking about future.
No solar. distance from switchboard to outlet in Garage less than 3m. Haven’t a decided on what wallcharger yet, prob won’t rush to install one just put in the cable and switchboard mods.

Any specs I should give the electrician ?

Thx Peter

if you are just prepping, just tell the electrician where you want it to go, and they will do the rest, when you eventually get one they will install the correct circuit breaker, isolation switch and the charger.

would also look to get one with a solar diversion option too.

The only issue is they will require a current clamp which needs to be installed in your switchboard and more often than not wired back to the charger, which sometimes can be different due to the location of both items.

6mm^2 or larger to the breaker panel to supply it

Cat-5 or better back to the metering or the breaker panel for a CT if you want to get one that will prevent overloading the supply to the house.

Another to where you have internet gear incase you want one with some smarts and dont want to wifi it.

But discuss it with a sparky who will be doing the work. To get a short length of twin and earth will be a hassle and they may not want to terminate cable they did not supply for SDOC on the cert reasons.

For a 3m distance, assuming it's reasonably straight, I would be looking at just drilling large holes and leaving drawwires.

What's the current 'state of play' for most recommended/best wall charging type 2 units in NZ with type A or B RCD and programmable charging windows?

I'm currently looking at Evnex E2, we-EV (Teltonika unit), and a couple others, but there are very few if any reviews or comparisons to guide the decision.

The Evnex E2 and Teltonika are where I'm currently sitting also. No clear winner, and I don't want it to come down to flipping a coin. At the moment Evnex is slightly ahead due to the local support.

I have an Evnex charger installed at home.
It's pretty good - I like that I can connect to it with the app and see what's happening, but it doesn't talk to the car like the public chargers do, so I never really know where I am at with regard to charging %.

It's relatively small and unobtrusive and is located outside on a wall, near the driveway.

According to the app, it's an X7-T2T

Exactly where I landed. Ended up getting the Evnex E2 with an 8m cable.
