MikeB4: The folks in our society that can least afford the price of petrol certainly cannot afford to by an EV. So yet another poverty trap has been sprung.

It is why the smug EV superiority attitude annoys me considerably. An number of folks that I support that have my condition can’t afford to run their modified vehicles and can’t use public transport. I have helped some fill their tanks but can’t afford to do that long term.

Yep, but halfway to EVs are hybrids.

Cars that do ~4l/ 100km. That's around double my honda fit.

I had a look on TM and there's zillions of them. All for around the cost of a beaten up people mover.

I don't know if there's hybrid vans for your use but there should be.

I'll be replacing the Fit with a hybrid Aqua or similar and at the current petrol prices it'll pay for itself in a few years.

They are literally giving you cash if you by a more efficient vehicle.

9-Apr-2019 :

amiga500:

Petrol prices on display for 91 octane ranged from $2.269 a litre to $2.279 at two petrol stations I saw earlier today. (BP & Mobil)   Diesel was about $1.68 to $1.70.

These prices are getting very close to $2.30 which was a record for Christchurch last year.   Judging by what I am seeing on Aljazeera today I think the price may beat that record before long...

Anyway, what are you paying in your city?

This thread started like 3 years ago, been plenty of opportunity to buy more fuel efficient vehicles since

Get real.

What percentage of an average EV does the rebate cover?  Of course they can all pay the balance, pay rent hikes or looming mortgage hikes, power price hikes. They do all that and buy an EV, pay to get it modified they will just have to give up the luxury of food and medical treatment.

Get real, its not just EVs that the rebate applies too.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

I mean it's the truth, the rebate was worth 10% of the value of a 30kwh Leaf and now it's worth less than that because the price went up but the rebate didn't scale with it.

You can write this off as 'but but but' but as someone who is spending $150 a fortnight to run a fuel efficient ICE, and trying to save for an EV to replace it, it's getting pretty difficult to make any real headway once all the other cost of living increases are factored in.

If you want cheaper imports and a higher NZD value we can raise interest rates?

You are either being deliberately disingenuous or you live in some alternate reality. The people I have been helping are having to make decisions of putting $20 in their tank to get to their doctor or buy food. That is the reality of these price increases. I have a real fear that a number of these folk are going die either by not getting medical attention or malnutrition or over the winter hyperthermia. Climb down off your pedestal and stop spout they can get an EV or some other clean car.

I mean... yes? I don't think people quite understand what an international shock looks like with a lower NZD. We import basically everything.

A cheaper EV means I have a) more free cash that I can stop spending on fuel and b) cash I can put towards my mortgage and mitigate the effect of higher interest rates.

But getting the initial purchase amount together is the first hurdle before I can even make use of the subsidy.

The cheapest petrol Te Awakairangi today for 91ron  $2.81 at a somewhat out of the way locality. The average where folks live is circa $3.08 as at 9am by lunch time it will be higher. The average for 95ron is circa $3.20

Can anyone explain why the price of crude has jumped, and then the end product purchased some time ago for the lower price at that time has suddenly jumped in price too?

To the layman, it would appear to be profiteering off the Ukrainian crisis?

It does but not in all areas and the maximum contribution has not kept pace with rising cost. Site accessibility is an issue. I have some community based ideas I have to help but even then the price of fuel is going to make them very difficult to get involvement and it is just going to get worse.

I believe the government is going to have to step up or we are going have a very bad outcome for many in Aotearoa before the end of winter. I feel that the government for a period of six months over the colder months should forego the petrol taxes. This will no doubt impact some road development and maintenance but that can be recovered at a later date, death cannot.
