Wow, that is a significant number! When we sold my wife's Leaf after six years of ownership it still had the battery it came with (unsure how old that was but it was Japanese; we were the first NZ owners).

Then again, when we sold it the HV battery had degraded to something like 7 or 8 bars from 12, and I know which of these problems I'd rather have...

I had to replace the 12v battery in mine after about a year of ownership. The battery would have been about 6 years old if original so normal life expectancy for mine.

I've been seeing about 1.7% per year degradation on my HV battery. SOH goes down about 5% summer to winter but then bounces back about 3% winter to summer. I keep my HV battery at about 60% SOC as much as I can. I charge it up to 60% when I get home from work using the timer in my phone. It takes about 10% SOC an hour of charging and 6 minutes per 1% using the granny charger. So, it's easy to work out how long it needs to charge to reach 60%. The charge timer is programed to top it off to about 80% just before I leave for work, and it is back down to about 60% when I get there. This regimen keeps the battery at about 60% SOC for about 19 hours per day, the rest of the time it is either charging or discharging.

My wife got the battery light this morning. The 12 V battery was replaced 2 months ago.

I popped the bonnet and checked the connections, and my multimeter said it's 12.59 V.

I got in the car to see any messages, and the car started normally. Did a supermarket visit with it.

I shall invest in a battery charger.

Any advice?

Which battery light are you talking about?

12.59v seems fine and if its new it should be all good.

Random question. Are the leaf granny chargers ok for outside use?

Depends on the IP rating of it.

Personally, I would be wanting to put the control box a bit under something to protect it from the weather

Depends on the brand. As a general rule the brick should be kept protected from weather. The brick in mine has "Indoor use only" printed on the back. It's fine to have the cord and car plug outside, it's really just the brick you need to worry about.

The original unit that came with my leaf in Japan (Nissan branded, but I think built by Panasonic) is much more sturdy, and on the back, states "do not submerge", so think it would be fine to use outdoors.

The red light at the top, where the other warning lights appear, such as seat belt warning. When that is on the car will not select Drive or Reverse (as my wife reports, I've not encountered it).

I was originally planning to get a weatherproof utility box fitted to the side of my house to hold my 16amp charger, but as often happens, my "temporary" solution to use a $10ish plastic storage crate with it zip tied to the bottom is doing a pretty damn good job I'm not sure I will bother.

I just have it flipped upside down on the driveway when charging, keeping the main unit out of the elements, and once done, the crate makes a portable and weatherproof way to store and transport it.

I cut two holes in my box (m10) so extension cord (heavy duty builders) went in one side and the car end out the other and left it outside for months while builders in way of wall caravan plug. (drive dug up for garage rebuild plus covid)

Interested in your thoughts about the Nissan Leaf battery packs currently being offered on AliExpress (just search Nissan leaf battery aliexpress).

Seeing 40 Kwh packs for around NZ$11k (ex NZ$750 shipping to NZ from China). 62 Kwh pack for NZ$12,500
They appear to be new battery packs. They specify as CATL NCM Lithium Cells, so not LFP technology, but still 1:1 replacement.
Besides complete battery packs, they also offer battery modules, even though the price of those are only marginally lower.

To me these offerings starting to make sense to me for a battery replacement for my own Leaf.
I'm seeing 2nd hand battery packs floating around in NZ for around same price but those are not new (SoH around 80 to 90%). So likely just another source or?

Anyone already dared to order a battery pack for inspection or actual replacement?

There was a good few discussions on the Nissan leaf owners NZ Facebook group about those batteries. Sounded like no-one on there is brave enough to take the plunge and give it a try at those prices. There's also tax in top of those prices too so not quite as cheap as it appears.

It's still a hard bargain though, almost $14k before installing the thing still puts you in the region of replacing the car entirely to either a 40kWh version or models like the mg zs that's now popping up at the $20k mark fairly often, take off the few thousands you'd get for the leaf and pricing is in the same ballpark.

A new pack won't solve the issues I have with my Leaf, which is the slow AC charging and the calorific intake of the driver creating a compatibility issue between one physical interface and the width of the bolsters on the lower seat.

For emergency power during a power cut I'm thinking to buy a portable power station which can be charged via AC, solar, or car (via cigarette lighter). Based on my research, the cigarette lighter in the Leaf is only working when the car is on, which is fine, as then it will also keep the 12v battery topped up from the high voltage battery.

The power station supports pass-through charging. So, the plan is to connect critical AC loads (2 fridges) to the power station, and keep it charged via the Leaf. As long as I stay below ~100w on average, I believe this should keep the power station at 100%. Obviously until the Leaf battery runs out.

Just wondering if there's any issue with this approach?

Not sure if the cig ligher would be enough for this. But should be easy enough to connect to the battery?

The car does need to be on to charge the internal 12v tho.
