Just as an exercise for current Tesla Model 3 owners, how would you go about operating your car in the following scenario?

A standard range Model 3, garaged at home (in Auckland) with a wall charger. Going on holiday to Whitianga in the Coromandel (220km one way). The apartment in Whitianga is set back from the street and I’m not sure what access to a powerpoint will be like (haven’t paid attention previously). We normally do a bit of driving on one or two day trips while we are in the Coromandel and it would be nice to do that emissions free. All of this at the height of summer, so the aircon would be on. While I’m not a hypermiler, I’m not a leadfoot either, because that just leads to car sickness.

This is probably the most extreme regular use case for us. Most travel is <200km in a day where we end up back at home. I’m pondering the standard range vs the long range because, with the rebate only applying to the former, there is a huge price difference.

SR can do 320-350km so getting there isnt a problem and should leave you some pottering kms when you get there

I usually take a chunky extension lead and mobile charger and see if I can charge at a bach

Otherwise theres plenty of  chargenet chargers in coro, one in Whitianga, I'd just pop into town and stick it on charge when getting lunch or shopping or something. Will only need an hour.

Am I right in thinking that charge will cost about $18? (15c/kW+15c/min). And excuse my ignorance, but would I need a Tesla adapter to use the Chargenet charger?

From what I could tell there are chargers at Thames, Coromandel, Whitianga, Tairua and Whangamata.

You dont need an adapter, car and charger both have CCS.

Prices vary but generally 25c per kwh and 25c per min, so an hour/50kwh would be $24 or so

One thing got pointed out to me (via the Tesla Owners Club NZ Facebook page) is that the mobile charger you get with the car can pull 32amps with the appropriate tail connector, which is a 7kW+ charge, so you could get a 32amp socket installed in the garage and save a lot of dollars by just using the mobile charger ... smart people designed that thing, swap the connector and it adjusts how many amps it can make available to the car :-)

Is there also the ability to use some form of caravan plug adapter and get 16A charging at home?

We have a caravan plug we use for my wife's Leaf, which is certainly a lot faster than a standard three-pin plug; I had wondered if there was a way to use this if/when we get a Model Y.

www.evseadapters.com

Is a very good website, if local Tesla don't have an adapter these guys will (though not usually original), I picked up a Type-2 to Type-2 cable and a 16a adapter for the mobile charger from them, had no issues other than Fedex taking 40days instead of 10.

Good to know it's theoretically available locally but out of stock at the moment.

Can you please confirm which appropriate adapter would be for a 16A caravan to Tesla mobile cable would be - I don't think this is the right one as it says "Note, this adapter does NOT fit the outlets in Australia that look similar (the Australian version is available from our dealers in Australia).")

Well, given you're getting a car that can actually be ordered and supplied in NZ, I'll let you off this time; I'm still forced to remain in planning mode until such time as the Y finally gets an NZ release...

I've got a new SR+ and have a Bach in the Coromandel (Pauanui). Using a better route planner it says I would end up from West Auckland to Pauanui with 52% battery left.  You should use ABRP to work out getting to Whitianga. Getting over pumpkin hill etc. will consume a bit but I don't think it will be all that bad.

I also had an outdoor socket installed with a 16amp breaker at the front of the place, but that might not be that easy in an apartment. Can let you know in a couple of weeks what real world usage is like.

I finally got the opportunity to take a Model 3 for a test drive today. It was the standard range single motor one but the performance was more than enough for an old fellow like me. Plus it qualifies for the CC rebate. It was a spur of the moment opportunity so I didn't get a chance to do the normal amount of research (lots) that I would do before a test drive. I also test drove a BMW 3 series on the same day. Would have liked to compare the Polestar 2 but there are none available for test drive yet.

I must say I was quite impressed by the Model 3. The seats were more comfortable than the BMW's (maybe built for the American form factor). It was quiet and smooth. I'm still processing (almost) all the controls, and all info, being on the centre display vs on a HUD, instrument and centre displays with numerous physical controls. I know it is a different design philosophy. Each has its merits from my perspective. And both voice assistants seemed to work. The BMW definitely drives better, but I am by no means a 'performance' driver, though if I'm honest, I do like the 'cockpit' feel of the beemer vs the Apple Genius feel of the Tesla. The available range from the SR+ should be sufficient for my needs I think.

Because of a lack of pre study I have some questions Model 3 owners may be able to answer for me.

Is there a "Dark Mode" for the display that can be used in daytime. I tried "Night" but it seemed too dim. I run pretty much all my devices in dark mode and prefer it.

Does the car alert you if the traffic lights change and you don't react? It seemed to beep at me when the turn arrows on traffic lights came up.

The blind spot monitoring seemed to only show a vehicle when it was right beside the C pillar. Is this normal? The BMW seemed to display vehicles hiding in the blind spot from much further back, and even my decade old Camry picked up things that were further back than the M3. Is it a setting that can be adjusted?

I worked out how to do adaptive cruise (push down on the RH stalk) but wasn't sure about lane keeping. Are they one and the same? Traffic on the motorway was a bit heavy to play too much. I don't mean Full Self Drive, just driver assistance.

There is no Android Auto or Apple Carplay (from my limited research) but can Siri or GA be accessed from the steering wheel if your phone is paired? Can you pick up an incoming call from one of the steering wheel buttons instead of having to touch the screen?

The key card seems a bit naff. Do most people rely on their phone to be their key?

If the Model 3 had been poor or even average it would have made decisions easier. But it was good. I was surprised that my wife prefers the BMW, especially (thanks to the CC rebate), since it is more expensive. Anyone familiar with my contributions to GZ will know I'm not electrifying for 'green' reasons or to virtue signal such. I like tech and what will "bring me joy". The Tesla stands a good chance of doing that.
