It is arguably partly the governments fault that it is affecting us this much, because it has been government policy that has been instrumental in making us dependent on the rest of the world.

I don't know how old you are, but back in my day the government tried to make NZ more self sufficient in everything it could. We used to make* TVs, stereos and even cars in this country. It was great because we had jobs where we made stuff.

The bad part of all this was for the people who bought the stuff we made. Because we made stuff, the government made it really really hard to just import stuff and cut the stuff we made out of the market. That meant if it wasn't made in this country, it was really hard to buy it. People just got used to the fact that you couldn't easily get the latest stuff. After all, this was the old days and we all felt pretty good about wearing flares and having mullets.

I admit it was frustrating when you met someone who went overseas on holiday and brought back something way better (and cheaper) than was available locally.

Things were expensive compared to overseas too. I guess our little factories just couldn't compete with a massive one pumping out much more for a world market but at least we had jobs.

We could go back to a highly regulated economy but I'm not sure if you'd like all aspects of that.

There are parts of California that are seeing up to $7/Gal. That's subsidised at the pump too

It isn't the government's fault that these events have happened.

Just as well the government is incentivising us to move to a fuel source for transport that is predominantly produced here in New Zealand then 😉 As a bonus, it has zero emissions!

My dilemma is range and the fact I stay in four different motels/hotels each week. I drive 500km stints three times a month and 1500km I a week. I'd have to plan ruthlessly and commit to a full fast charge perhaps once a day.
Believe me I've been looking at the numbers.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Maybe consider a less comfortable more economic compact or equivalent that uses significantly less petrol to carry you the same distance.

Oh absolutely. Last year the car averaged 5.88L per 100km, so there is possibly some scope to improve. I'm lucky I'm that it runs on 91 too. Which was $2.997 yesterday when I filled up.
But I'll keep EV talk to the other thread, I'm not changing cars for two years anyway.

If Vlad the Invader is still in Ukraine in 2 years time, I think there will be bigger problems than the price of gas.

I wouldn't rule it out.

War will be long and bloody, the cost will be harsh for everyone. Don't be surprised if we enter another depression. And don't be surprised if the fuel gets over $5/L. I think i might invest a bit more in my home/office. Seems to make sense. Even after COVID is done, 3-4 days a week from home still makes sense.

Russia couldnt tame Afghanistan over decades.

They've (from reports) lost ~10% of their entire army in just 2ish weeks in Ukraine, they wont be there in 2 years.

Early on we saw Russian vehicles "running out of fuel" (hole in the tank?) Elsewhere, dozens of Russians surrendered at first sight of Ukraine forces. .. These kids didn't sign up for this war. Some of them are just ...out and done.

Brent Crude back down to $111 from $128, I don't think we'll see this passed on at the Petrol Pump in a hurry

But we were never energy independent ,

When the oil shocks came  the solutions were to ban everyone from driving on one self selected day of the week, and cutting the national speed limit to 80km/h.

In the long term it resulted in Gas-Gasoline projects, incentives to add CNG as a fuel source to your car and

Bordering on politics, the GST take on petrol per day is approx. $1million more than it was a year ago.

(Calculated as follows, petrol price $1 more per litre, annual petrol sales of 3.2 billion litres per year [source: comcom], arbitrary deduction by me of 20% for commercial sales,  = 7 miilion litres of retail petrol sales per day.)

Yes, politics.

Bear in mind that govt fuel now also costs 25% more.
