I work very close to 2CheapCars New Lynn.

If anyone ever wants photos/video taken and can't do it themselves, I can shoot over after work if anyone sees something they like and can't see it for themselves.

After all the comments we bought a VW Golf, Japanese import last week. We paid a $200 fee to hold the car (non-refundable but came off the price) while arranging for an AA assessment. AA gave good review in general but pointed a couple of faults (a small leak and the struts didn't hold the hatch door anymore). Also the tyres didn't seem to be the same as the one in the original car description - 1.5mm difference.

We pointed this out, and they arranged for repairs and swapped with newer tyres.

We then sent the Grabone voucher (thanks jonb for the tip!) to have the final price calculated. They prepared the documentation and sent via email to us on Saturday. I signed a PDF version using a digital certificate and signature and sent back. We paid with credit card (they charge 2% "convenience fee") but I felt it was safer than money transfer and we get cashback anyway...

Car arrived Thursday on the back of a truck. All in good condition (except the windows switches which are quite worn by use, but it's a cosmetic thing).

Can't complain of the process really, I think they were quite patient as it took almost two weeks for everything to happen.

I wouldn't recommend them personally, as my experience with them has been just awful. Their after-sales service is shockingly poor. I think freitasm had the right idea getting it checked out before purchase, rather than afterwards. They don't pick up the phone when you ring, they don't return phone calls or emails and their customer service number just hangs up on you. The car I purchased broke down shortly after purchase and I'm now having apply to the MV disputes tribunal to get the issue sorted. Very, very poor company.

Of course, I can only comment on my own experience and YMMV.

They provide warranty if you pay extra for it - actually an insurance policy. This is in addition to the CGA. In our case they wanted us to sign a waiver saying that if anything goes wrong with the car and we need repairs they would do it in Auckland, transport at our expense. We declined the "warranty".

We took the car to Gazley Wellington as soon as it arrived and got an all clear from them.

Who told you it isn't covered by the CGA, because it appears they are wrong according to this

The CGA covers second hand vehicles (provide they're bought from a registered dealer) but doesn't give specifics on timeframe. It depends on the age of the vehicle and what is 'reasonable'. For example, if you bought a brand new car and found it had serious issues after 2 years, then you would likely have a claim against the company you bought it from. But if it was a $1500 car and it broke down in a few months, you likely wouldn't.

What if the car has a minor breakdown and it requires a repair under CGA? Does your waiver mean you have to pay the transport to Auckland and back? or are you not covered?

I live in Auckland and bought a car in Wellington online and got it shipped. They have fixed my issues by asking me to go to their preferred places in Auckland. I was not asked to sign any waiver.

Yes, the CGA doesn't apply to private sales as far as I am aware, just to dealers. Timeframe is difficult to judge, as so many different conditions for cars, and how they are treated, and how much they are used. Also some brands are just more reliable and higher quality than others.

Since then they backed out of that, seeing they do have a store in the Wellington region ;)

Seems they have Industrial Relations issues with their service staff too:

That's a bit off topic, but since you touched it... I read on The New Zealand Herald that their union complained that staff (in this case Indian workers) felt they shouldn't complain or risk having their work visas revoked.

This really begs the question: how can immigration give work visas to car washers? Is this something unemployed New Zealanders don't have the skills to do?

This story is not completely clear, so I discounted it.

Perhaps they are on student visas? Though generally international students are only allowed to work 20 hours per week, and I read 2cheapcars claim to be paying some $1000 a week, so who knows.
