It really depends on the ethos of the dealership. I walked into the local toyota and asked for a discount they laughed at me. Out the door.

Went to Mitsubishi he said yes of course that's what Mitsubishi does without any serious negotiation.

It really depends on the season. If they can't order cars in fast enough then no discount but a good dealer should still have room for freebies. If they haven't sold a car all month they will sell to you below cost, but no freebies.

If you want discount and freebies then somewhere in between.

That's what I'm currently counting on!

The dealer of the car I'm looking at had $10,995 on the window, I offered him $5,000.  I KNOW he wants to move it.  He told me it's not enough so I walked away, giving him my card asking him to call me when he wants to sell.  Two weeks later he calls my phone and says he can do $6,500.  I've got the feeling I'm going to drive away after giving him $4,500 with on-road costs thrown in.  He will be begging to take my money in a few months!

The trick is to find out the lot number and compare it to other lot numbers, then get a strong indication from a local as to how long the car has been sitting.  The car I'm looking at has been sitting in the same spot (prime position on the yard too!) since July!

It's the same story with an RX-8 on a local yard I went to visit.  I was interested (until I found out it was automatic) and told the salesman I missed it every morning as I came from the other side of the intersection.  The very next morning, the RX-8 had been moved to the other side of the yard staring me right in the face as I made my right turn.  Cheeky bugger!  It's still there too!  Nobody wants an automatic RX-8, haha :)

alasta: Thanks Tony - that's really useful information.

It's interesting that BMW were flexible because I'd heard the opposite in another thread here a while ago. I'm quite keen on the 1 series but the list price is slightly outside of my budget, so it might be worth trying my luck with them.

My father just got $10.5k discounted off a RAV4 but Toyota's list prices seem a bit inflated so I guess they have room to move. I can understand them being reluctant to discount special order models.

From what i have heard, the markup on the European cars are 30% so a 10k drop is no surprise. Just let them know you are interested and tell them to drop you a line if they have a deal for you otherwise dont bother. I have add a number of calls after that the following week with some interesting offers

I am also looking at the Santa Fe. Keen to know what level of discount you got in addition to the other items you mentioned. Also what is the 4 years service you are referring to. Is this free servicing? I didn't thnk that Hyundai offered this.
cheers

Reminds me of getting a huge shock seeing at least 100 brand new cars with all the plastic on the bonnet etc. in a paddock new the Omaka Heritage Center.  Not sure what they were, but they all had the same badge, although the models were different.  I still don't understand why so many new cars would be stored in a field near Blenheim of all places.

When I last bought a new car, (Ford Focus) they built strictly to order.  There were so many spec options, that FMC never made vehicles on the off chance someone would want that exact spec.  They had to build some for showrooms of course.

It took about a month to get the new car.
