They explained on seven sharp, they opened the car, put the fob down on a bench, did other stuff got in the car then it locked. Then panic did the rest.

Keyless entry cars will re-lock if the fob is not in the car.

so, you can never leave the car unlock without having the fob inside?

I have two cars with these things. Neither locks. The only way they lock is if it was locked. I unlock it but never opened the door. It re locks

All our cars will lock if fob is not in it. When I was picking up the new car the dealer made a point of advising me of this feature. Its a good security feature that can also be a pain, like unlocking ...talk to someone... Clunk locked

Mine only automatically relocks if none of the doors are opened within about 30 seconds of pressing the button. As soon as a door is unlocked, it'll only lock by pressing the button on the remote or doors. This is a Mazda 6 so I'd be surprised if the 3 operates any differently.

Dependent on the car and usually something that can be changed by the dealership.

My Jeep doesn't do that and I don't remember seeing it in the new e class.

The vehicle was a Mazda hatch and they don't have an internal release like a boot on a saloon

Actually they do have an emergency boot release but you do have to look for it/know where it is.

Where is it?

After a while oxygen deprivation could easily have have been an issue in the stunningly bad decision making.

Unlikely. Coz death is a few minutes away once oxygen deprivation sets in

I would not have thought oxygen deprivation would have been an issue at all. Would have thought there was enough oxygen exchange in the car to stay in there safely for a whole lot more than 13 hours.

It is pretty stupid. But panic gets to the best of us. When in situations of panic, or even just difficult decision making...I take two steps back and tell my brain to start functioning normally.

A similar case for us happened a few days ago. We locked ourselves out of our house after playing car tetris all day. One car at the mechanics with 1 house key and the other house key inside the house. We were thinking about how to solve the issue without breaking in to our own house when I remembered our landlord had a spare key. Our landlord is just next door to us, so was quite an easy situation to fix after getting all pissy and worked up about it.

My partner was quite close to just breaking a window though, haha :)

My car will happily let you unlock the boot with the key fob, but if you haven't already turned the alarm off, it'll promptly start sounding. Bizarre design.

Physically unlocking the car using the key doesn't disable the alarm either, hopefully I never have to find out how to disarm it if/when the battery goes flat on me.

agreed.
cars do not become not hermetically sealed when the doors are closed.
