I've been looking for something that records to a unti stashed somewhere secure with tracking features, forward and reverse facing cameras. I don't care for the reversing camera, but a camera that points out the back window would be great. I don't want a big bulky thing on either side of my car though. Does not seem to be any lens products that feed to a central recorder to store the footage for later.

I have seen a guy on another website that had a front and rear facing camera set with joint storage. However all of those solutions are still SD-based.
If you want something with hard drives you may have to build yourself a "car PC" and mount it in the boot. Could use it as an audio/media system as well.

Mind you if you have a decent dash cam you can use VERY high capacity SD cards.
I currently have a 64GB card in my DOD dash cam and it allows me to record about 8 hours of Full HD footage before it cycles back to the first clip.

It has 2 cameras, one is mounted in the front window (and has the SD storage, with max 64 GB card), and the other is linked via a coax cable (transfers video and power) for the rear window.

Think I am going to go with Amazon. Buying both the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH, the Power magic (power management, so it can be used while parking without risking you drain your battery), and using the deal they have at the bottom with USD 410 for the package + a Samsung 64GB microSD card.

On all the dual camera ones I have looked at the rear camera is analog sd composite video. So useless really.

Ooh that one looks better.

For me to use one it would need to offload all data over wifi when parked at home/work/wherever. None of this use an app carry on.

The Lukas dashcam looks interesting. But I think the front unit gets too big, and the OBD has very limited support for car models. So think I will stick with the Blackvue. It doesn't get in the way when its mounted (can't see it at all from drivers position, since its mounted behind the rear view mirror), and the sample videos I have seen look good.

I am pretty happy with the one I have now, but it does have some problems with loosing details when there are a lot of changes in the video, like if you drive through an area with lots of threes. This is supposed to have been fixed in the new version.

I notice a lot of flare and windscreen reflections in just about all the dash cam footage on YouTube. Something I carry for stuff like zoo photography, is a flexible rubber lens hood. With this you can eliminate reflections, and even use camera flash if you hold the hood against the glass.

Regards the flare, then mounting the camera high and away from the screen would avoid flare until you were into a very low sun situation. but you'd be back to reflections. It still STM that there ought to be a good compromise to improve IQ. Do the cams come with any sort of lens hood?

[EDIT] Looking some more, I'm thinking the cams have ultra wide angle lenses, which might be tricky regards an effective lens hood.

There are threads where people discuss home made polarizing filters for their car cams to try to reduce reflections. Getting people to 3d print housings with magnets etc. - for me probably too mcu effort/cost for my cheap camera. Though might look into it when looking at next cam.

Also saw one where posters was suggesting avoiding using "shiny" vinyl car products to clean the dashboard which is one I will look at next time in a car shop.

Fix for my model for the contrast issues and flare, is a bit of electrical tape across the top, cut to a certain width and extended a precise distance to stop it lol

My DOD LS460W has a plastic "lens hood" covering the lens from flare and direct sunlight but only just above the lens.

That would be me. Its a Blackvue DR500GW-HD. Pretty good Dashcam.

Here is a video review of the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH. Might be a nice upgrade to the one I have at the moment.

I am looking to get this sooner than later, any good alternatives I should look at? Does anyone have this one? Does the gps record where you are, or just speed?

Another question slightly off topic, are you able to use recordings as evidence if you are involved in a crash? can you use it to report dangerous drivers?

As to the GPS: It records position and you can look at your video through the Blackvue software and see where you have been driving. The unit also records things like G-forces that you can also look at through the Blackvue software.

As to using the video as evidence, I am not a lawyer, but I don't see why you would not be able to use it as evidence after a crash or to report someone.
