Great post here, amazing work to get this done on your own.

Just out of interest, do you have any before and after pics of the radio? Also any pics of the factory looms, or camera connectors you used? I am about to begin this process and any pics would be great.

Are you also doing a head unit upgrade on a Mazda?

Here is the original head unit in the car:

For the install I did have to cannibalise the original wiring harness cable witch sits between the car's Mazda 24 female connector and the original factory head unit. The reason was because places like Repco, Super Cheap Autos, Ebay, Amazon did not sell a wiring harness which included the extra wires needed .i.e Parking Break, Speed Sensor, Reserving Wire ans Steering Wheel controls.

If you take the car to a professional installers they would simple cut of the connectors and hardwire the head unit directly into the car's wiring (Yuck).

This is the only decent picture of the bastardized wiring cable I have. I needed it for my reference to highlight the extra wires.

Funny this thread is been revived, just last weekend I installed a Pioneer AVH-2700BS which I purchased from Amazon in my 2005 VW Touareg. Obviously I didn't do my research properly cause if I had I would have found out that USA radio models only go up in increments of 0.2 on FM and 10 on AM (vs 0.1 and 9 in NZ). So I only can listen to half of the radio stations, gah. That will learn me. At least I saved $200 over the price of buying one in NZ. Next time I need to buy the euro version.

Trying to work out if I can flash the euro firmware onto it, but at the moment I am not brave enough. Going to wire in a reversing camera in the next week or two.

I was also tempted to buy a Pioneer NEX unit with Apple Car Play and Built-in Navigation from a Amazon. But I quickly realised the the GPS navigation is not supported here in NZ. I did not know about the Radio frequency thingy, I knew about Japan but not the US, surprising.

Are you installing a new reversing camera or are you trying to hook up the factory camera?
I have seen some reversing cameras where the LCD monitor is stealthed behind a rearview mirror.

I have a feeling, the loom in here is going to be non standard Mazda just like my CX7 from japan had. That was a hideous install to complete, which took me over 8hours to complete as I had to integrate the 12 speaker Bose system. hopefully this is much easier, and doesn't require to much extra work.

From much reading on the internet I know the Bose system seemed to be a pig to integrate into.

No, I don't have any camera currently installed. Plan is to buy one of the cameras that replaces the number plate light with a unit that has number plate light + camera integrated. Then I will have to run a cable all the way from the boot to the front. Also it seems that getting the reverse signal from the CANBUS loom is not possible so I will run a second cable from the reverse lights to the head unit to trigger the camera on/off.

I wish I had done better research before I bought the headunit. Unfortunately now I am stuck with it. Still a nice bit of kit though. I found I can get a 0.1Mhz band expander which I assume you link to an easily accessible switch and that allows you to turn it on/off if you want an even or odd numbered station. Doesn't fix it for AM though. I wasn't too fussed about GPS integration seeing as I live in the south island I seldom need to look at a map to get to where I want (and if I do I have a phone).

Firstly I would like to say hi and thank you for all the information that everyone has contributed to this topic.

I am a new owner of a 2009 Mazda mpv and have been working on getting both the cameras working this feature was very short lived only from 2007 to 2009 (Mazda dealership said)
the person that I purchased the car from pulled the factory head unit out and replace it with a cheep and nasty unit lucky for me he used a wiring harnesses I have replaced this with a JVC KW-V51BT I have found that my mpv did not have these black boxes instead it had a clarion C9C1-V7-538 unit behind the top glove box but you need to remove both of them to get better access

From the information that I have found I have come to the conclusion that the clarion C9C1-V7-538 unit only powers the camera system and outputs the signal to the head unit there are other versions of this box with extra features so please take that into account. after wiring it to a power supply the little Switching button ( with Japanese writing on it) lit up on the dash the camera plugs are just to the right of the box (white 4 pin plugs) x 2 one for the front side view camera and one for the rear camera.

the green plug that comes off of this unit is the video output the white wire is the positive video signal I wired this to an rca plug and plugged it into the head unit and it now works there is some Japanese writing on the bottom of the screen when I put the car into reverse I still have not got them both working properly but when I get some more time I think I have found the solution to this problem I'll post an update of how I get on hope this helps

Hey, good work in working out pin-out functionally of the C9C1-V7-538 unit. I was originally going to use that unit originally myself, but I did not have the patience to work out single cable plus it was a bit over whelming with all the wires. I would have found trouble shooting pain in the neck.

You will properly never find any C900-V7-538 unit existing in any Japanese imports as they are sold as optional accessory item sold to owners who want to replace the head-unit with a after market unit. I found it a little bit frustrating at the time when I was talking to Mazda NZ parts departments when I was trying to order the C900-V7-538 unit. The guy keep telling me the item is not part of original parts list based upon the VIN number of my car. Eventually I managed to order item (black boxes) anyway.

What I find mildly amusing is my next door neighbor has the same year MVP with some JDM upgrades and he never realized that he even had a side camera in the mirror due to the dealer replacing the head-unit before he purchase it.

Keep us posted regarding the manual toggling between the cameras. I do believe that you need to 'trick' the head-unit that the car is in reverse to get the video signal from the side camera. Also i'm planing to replace the momentary switch with one from eBay. However I 'm not sure what voltage is or pins are used for the exiting switch.

Cool, we just bought a 2010 Premacy and looking to remove the Jap unit with something 'local" :) Good to see it can be done without hacking the dash apart ;)

I'm I right in thinking that your new car only has one reversing camera? If so I guess the upgrade will be simple as long as the radio/nav unit is not integrated into the dash and its just a standard double din.

No cameras at all, and depending on what I'm allowed to spend on a new headunit, might not bother with one at all. Think its the next model up from ours that came with a camera.

Its an Eclipse (Fuji) system, has an SD card with maps etc but apparently cant do anything with it really.....

Reviving this thread as have just purchased an MPV with this dual camera setup.

Previous owner has installed a cheap China android head unit and neither camera was hooked up.

Have been through today and fired up the existing Clarion C9C1 V7 538 unit.
Cut off the connector that supplies power, as this was specific to the previous head unit.
Likewise, cut off the green output connector, and fed the small coax cable into a standard RCA plug.
Fed the unit and head unit with a reversing signal and it all sprang to life.

So I’m doing ok, have connected the factory rear view camera into a none factory head unit.

Only issues I have are:

The switch concept isn’t working. Camera switch button lights up and using a meter can see the resistance is changing, so switch is working. Have swapped cameras over and the side camera is working, just the switching process is not.

Anyone been in this situation?
Wonder if there’s an additional connection I’m not noticing etc.

Android unit seems to be running a custom firmware, and this doesn’t support the video out. This is another issue, but a pain as the roof monitor isn’t being sent a signal from it and there are no menu options for that. Need to investigate chance of installing a newer image than the current android V7.1.2

I've just purchased a 2007 Mazda MPV 23T and I'm wanting to upgrade the stock Japanese head unit with an English Language one. Has anyone found a head unit and done a setup that has the following features?

Reverse Camera that activates when the car is put into reverse.
Can toggle between Left Side Mirror camera and Front camera by pressing the camera toggle button on the steering wheel.
Has a single video output to connect to the roof mounted monitor behind the front seats
Has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which I can activate by pressing the Voice button on my steering wheel (originally used for navigation I believe). I would also be happy with the steering wheel speech button button simply activating Siri on my iPhone or Google Voice (or whatever it's called) on an Android phone (connected via Bluetooth).
DVD Player (for playing dvds on the back monitor)
OR
Ability to play videos stored on my iPhone / Android phone or other storage device (USB, internal HDD, etc).
Mode and volume buttons on the steering wheel would need to work too.

Basically, I want all the original buttons on the car steering wheel and the existing 3 cameras to continue to work after replacing the head unit. I don't want to have to add any extra buttons or ditch any cameras. I'm sure those camera feed switches seen previously in this topic could be configured somehow to switch between the front and left camera and I'm guessing the car already has one of those boxes.
