Went through this a few years ago.Long story short had just finished my car did a full engine swap was just heading to vtnz with a cert to be able to drive on the road to get certified by the way i was uninsured as car hadnt been used in atleast 6 months was driving and an elderly lady changed lanes and didnt check and hit me wrote off my car took about 3 weeks to get a valuer to check how much my car was worth.i had just spent 12k on engine work he came and said 2k max he was a really nice dude but his hands were tied.So in the end i got paid 2k BUT when they came to pick the car up it was a shell on wheels.
OP if they have rejected your claim then you need to dispute it.I had to deal with the ladies insurance as soon as she laid a claim and i hounded but in the end took 6 weeks to sort out.In which i had no car and a young family so had to buy another car

Not technically the case. If the claiming party only has 3rd party insurance, it's as if they had no insurance. This is one of the benefits of full insurance (along with coverage for glass and 'acts of god')
In other words - unless the O.P. has full insurance they are of no importance to any insurance company.
