KiwiNZ:
TonyR1973: That's turning right onto Lambie Drive from Cavendish Drive. There are many more just like it too. I must make a collection and send them in to get a form letter reply from the NZTA bearing no relevance to the question I'll pose, being "WHY?".

If I'd been first in the queue in that situation, I'd probably have just gone, following a cursory scan for invoice issuers, as I usually do. It really is utterly ridiculous. Bear in mind we'd been sitting there long enough for me to get annoyed, which doesn't happen easily, plus get my phone out and take the photo too. But I have to be a little more careful with the new wave of red light cameras too and increasingly dashcam-owning common sense suppressing, sticky beaks.

Red light running is extremely foolish and not something to brag about

Not that long ago we didn't even have red arrows - I'm surprised we survived without them.

Aredwood: The problem is that the govt is too scared to deal with the real big elephant in the room. And that is driver skills - or lack of. There are people on the roads who have not done any kind of practical driving test in over 50 years. And the test that they would have done would be very simple compared to today's full licence test. They need to introduce compulsory practical tests every 10 years. Which can be done at the same time as drivers licences are renewed.

Only problem is that all of those who have bad habits but think that "they" are a good driver. Would get a big reality check.

I would love to see a 10-year FULL retest introduced. Along with a mandatory 28-day licence suspension for any at-fault driver in a crash of any kind, But the government that introduced it would be "unpopular" because most people think crashing is an inevitable part of driving (because they're so crap at it), hence they never would.

It always amuses me that these threads recur every few months and the same debates are had but by different groups of people

It always amuses me the number of people that just blindly do as they're told without ever thinking for themselves.

So I am guessing that puts you in the "the law applies to everyone else but me" category?

Oh crap!

Bung: During periods of light traffic why don't those dedicated turn arrows revert to just greens? In Wgtn I'm sure lights are programmed according to demand. In peak time the arrows are the only way to get through some intersections.

I believe in the US in the quiet time traffic lights go flashing amber   which means  the normal give way rules apply.  Speeds up the flow at say 3.00am in the morning..   Here when the lights go flashing amber no one seems to know what to do  but they could always be educated..

Recently I've noticed Wgtn intersections going flashing amber when some dickhead has blocked one or more lanes to cross traffic. AFAIK right turn arrows arrived at some intersections after left turning traffic regained right of way. In rush hour the right turn arrow gets a few cars through that otherwise would be stuck forever. Off peak the arrows usually aren't needed.

No. It puts me in the "use some common sense" category.

that then begs the question 'whose common sense' as not everyone thinks the same you only need to drive for 5 minutes in Auckland rush hour traffic to see that.

Laws are there for a reason to stop people doing their own thing, which we would.

There's no issue with green right turn arrows - in some places they are certainly needed. My beef is with the red arrows where they're not needed.

In some cases. But in the case of red arrows, in their absence the give way rule applies. So there's a "law" for it already to satisfy your lust to be controlled.

The worst drivers in the lower north island used to be "H H H"

Hyundais, Hatchbacks and Hats.

These days you could probably add an S for SUVs
