Diesel - 94 cent

question, NZ $ is nearly on par with the aus $ yet aussie fuel is 40cents cheaper , did notice oil companies are using a new tact blaming higher refining costs

Tax makes up a big componet of fuel cost in NZ, and I suspect in NZ we probably have more kms of sealed roads per person in NZ than in Oz.

Personally i dont think the gull factor actually holds any salt, in palmy mobil is routinely cheaper than both gull stations (and other companies) when we drive by.
I know gull like to state in the media how great they are at being the cheapest, but in palmy ive found its the competion that is usually cheaper (in fact gull's local self service station whenever ive looked is usually a few cents dearer than the competition.).

An interesting note: travelling from palmy through to hawkes bay for xmas, little waipukurau was the cheapest of the lot (only a two station town as well). It was cheaper than palmy, dannevirke, hastings and napier by at least 5 cents.

Many potential factors at play, for example

Fuel is refined near Whangerei (Marsden Point) and has to be transferred to Auckland somehow.
Storage bunkers in Auckland sit on more valuable land.
Service stations in Auckland sit on more valuable land etc.
In a city with heavy traffic volumes, the inconvenience of following cheaper fuel around may negate the effects of increased competition.

The list goes on ...

Whether Gull are the cheapest or not is not the point,

once you get south of Masterton/Levin you will fince pump prices jump - and all things being equal that should not happen (refined fuel is delivered to Wellington by Bulk Marine Tanker- [from either Marsden or anywhere else]) and tankered to Levin/Masterton,

economics would say that Wellington should be cheaper,

It isn;t, and that simply because Gull are not present...

Gull *is* present in Levin (or at least was, the last time I went through) in the form of a self-service station (on the left when going south).

This used to be several cents cheaper than other nearby stations.

That was my point,

fuel prices in Levin and Masterton ( Both where Gull has a presence) are much lower than Wellington.

These two places are the closest Gull gets Wellington ( I'm guessing because the Majors have a stranglehold over the import infrastructure in Wellington) and Wellington is too large to service by Road tanker...

Couple of days back I had the light come on in the new car when I was in albany and not wanting to risk it since I have no idea if I get 20k or 100k once the light is on decided to fill up.

Saw 1.849 on the sign at a caltex so pulled in. Problem is that 95 was 2.099. Absurd. Anyway since I am trying to get a few fills to start using fuelly again I had to fill at that outragous price.

I really think they should have to put all prices on the sign outside, not just put the cheap lawnmower fuel's price.

Fuel card from Arfai.co.nz I have used them for years. Mobil is typically the best though the diesel truckstops discount was pretty good when I had a 4wd.

Higher overheads for fill stations in the city will account for some of the price difference

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yep .  saw it at 2.04 yesterday  going home at a Zzz station.   Anyone know why the constant creep up.  NZ $$,  oil going up or just the oil companies increasing their margins..??

Regards,

Old3eyes
