A V8 e38 is a beautiful thing... the 6, not so much.

As long as you enjoy, that's all that matters!

I'm in love with the handling and the lack of road noise. But I see why there are so many threads on the internet asking about options for more power!

One of my life goals is a V8. I've only ever owned turbo 4 bangers. Perhaps an E36 V8 should be my next step. :)

DravidDavid: The plan is to drive it for 5,000 kilometers. I'll give it a clay, cut and polish Seal it, wax it and sell it for twice what I bought it for.

If that's the plan, then make sure you keep all your receipts so you can claim the expenses against the income you make when you sell it.

that's the only way to go. you can't make a cheetah out of a rhino. in my experience modding is a waste of money (certain cars exempt from comment)

2.0L turbos gain a lot for very minimal input at a certain amount of risk. But you're right. This engine seems to be just straight up useless to begin with, so might as well enjoy the fact it's low kms and drives nice rather than trying to make it go faster.

The 318 is the BMW for people who just _have_ to have a BMW, unless it's one of the more interesting variants. They're nice enough cars but nothing very exciting, that said the last one I drove would've been a mid-90s model about 7 years back.

For $2600 it sounds like a bargain though!

Much the same thoughts as the in-laws 2L Audi A4 turbo. Gutless & poor handling, and that's compared to a '96 Mirage that I had at the time.

I should've learned my lesson about Euro's, but I didn't, so I've got an Alfa Romeo 147. If you want to know about "common issues", ask an Alfa owner!

The boss has some twin-turbo diesel BMW 5 series machine with a performance chip. It is terrifyingly quick, hate to think what it cost.

I'm not sure if the fancy M stuff and alloy wheels make it one of the fancy ones. I'm tempted to call it middle of the road. It does not have the fancy trim I see in others!

My girlfriend and I both called it the Corolla of BMW. Similar power, similar trim level, with much better sound-proofing, comfort options and better paint.

By the way, last night, the rear hatch door came down on my head, haha! I quickly learned you can't just get it three quarters of the way there and have it lift itself up. You need to push it ALL the way up!

As soon as it struck me, the first thing my minds eye saw as I rubbed my head was you standing next to your motorbike with your helmet on.

I'm going down to SuperCheap on Saturday to pick up that trim removal tool kit. Do you know a BMW specialist in West/Auckland North Shore I can talk to?

I contacted a BMW specialist today about the window regulator.

They wanted over $500 dollars for the window regulator and $165+gst for the slides. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah...

...Na.

This car is going to be brilliant. Finally I'll be forced to fix something myself. Found a regulator on TradeMe for $90.00. I'll give it a crack myself, get half way through and then just take it to my mechanic to do if I stuff it up. Either way, I'll save money!

As much as I'd love to take it to BMW to fix properly, I'm not spending almost half the car's value on a damn window.

1998 BMW 318ti M-Sport

86,000KM on the clock
10 years of service records. Purchased from a lady who used it as a a shopping car who purchased it NZ new at 24,000KM.

Aware of all the cooling issues, so we'll definitely be keeping an eye on that. She was going to get a Corolla, but hates the numb feeling they produce when driving. She calls it "a driving simulator" as she feels detached from the car. She said this is a dream to drive, nice and tight on the road. Dealer level diagnostic scan came up clean and had a fresh WOF end of last week. Paint is in excellent condition!

Purchased it for $2,600 so she's pretty happy. I've already taken the time to sign up to all the appropriate forums. Any advice for new 3 series owners would be appreciated. What I do want to find, is a dealer that will be able to use the VIN and pull all the records I don't have and add them in. Records from BMW from when it was still under warranty in the 90's. I've heard that can be done, but not 100% sure.

Um, after I had done mine 3 times and it kept twisting out I took it to BMW and they fixed it properly for about $150. It wont need a new regulator and slides (ok it might but I doubt it)

For what you paid; and compared to what you could have had for similar money - you've done well. Enjoy it for what it is.

And in a year or two you can buy a six :)

It's a bit dirty now due to the driveway, but here is a photo! :)

The paint really is stellar on this thing. A few scratches, but nothing that won't buff out.
