With more power comes the need for more control.

They must have turned off ESP. Dumb.

That is something you ABSOLUTELY could not know and is completely unfounded speculation.

mudguard: However I'm surprised that someone could do 270k at Hampton Downs.

FYI, Professional International Driver piloting a $1m+ Ferrari 458 GT Racecar at Hampton Downs = approx. 260kph

(and even a standard 458 will run a 11.5 ET at 200kph)

I know a standard Italia can do 240k at Hampton Downs. So it's safe to say 270k is probably unreasonable.

Ah just read the news piece. Went over an undulation. Car must have lept and the landing would have pointed the car towards the tree. May or may not have had time or ability to correct their line. Miracle they are still alive.

I was peripherally involved after this incident, so in terms of the age question, one was mid-40's. Not that it really matters IMO, the older you are possibly the less likely you are to take risks (statistically anyway), but that definitely doesn't apply to all comers

I also have speculations about this:

a) The car was using jet fuel.
b) A bee got stuck in the brake caliper causing it to lock
c) It hadn't had an oil change since 1974
d) The road was on an incline due to a pebble
c) I also own a car
i) The driver was as bad at bullet points as I am
f) he/she had recently eaten a large sausage causing their reaction time to slow and
k) all of the above

I think that explains it clearly.

I fixed your point A. You left a bit off (I added in bold)

Trees and power poles have a lot to be answered for. I suggest we have a referendum to look into removing all pole like objects and trees across the country.

trig42: Wow, how lucky were they.

Must have been some serious speed.

Also, I wouldn't call $100,000 affordable. Though I'm sure you can get them as imports, but they will still be expensive.
You can get a second hand one for ~$65000.

Wow is THAT all?  So affordable I might get one as a runabout

For a supercar it is cheap considering a mazda 6 can go for 48k

UHD: This has nothing to do with the car and everything to do with the driver. I can get an old Nissan Sunny up to 120/130 and wrap myself around a tree if I wanted to.

My thoughts exactly, I had a GT Legacy and was overtaken by a 1L Nissan March on the motorway.

Its the driver not the car, and a lot of people think because they're in a performance car, that they should be able to drive like a race car driver. I never drove like an idiot in my Legacy, it was my pride and joy, there was no way I was going to risk losing it, myself or someone else.

If I wanted to drive like a race car driver, I'd be sensible and head to Hampton Downs or Pukekohe, not the local back street..... (never got the chance to goto either tho :( )

JC once said, "its not speed that kills, its the sudden stop"

These guys almost learnt that......

Waste of a car.

Yes, but having a high performance car is more likely to make the driver want to make use of the extra power/performance, especially if he/she has a passenger they are trying to impress. And as you said it can make them think they can drive it "like a race car driver".

I was recently taken for a drive in a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, and it is frightening the sort of speed an power some road legal cars are capable of. I had a bit of a drive myself, but was far too scared to take it anywhere how the owner was driving it. Obviously this car is outside virtually anyones price bracket, but there are still plenty of more affordable cars out there that are essentially road legal track cars. And allowing inexperienced and untrained drivers behind the wheel surely contributes to the road toll.

That is still a fault with the driver, not the car.
