What is it with people? Yes I can see you are turning, no need to put the indicator on when you do it. You are just wasting fuel at that point. The indicators are there to signal that you are GOING to do something, not that you are doing it. The later is OBVIOUS even without signalling.

gzt: Nothing against silver cars myself. In some daylight overcast conditions they are harder to notice in peripheral vision or rear/side view if the lights are off and coming at ya out of the sky background.

What is the actual rule anyway?

The sunset rule makes it legal to drive with lights off during a partial eclipse ; ).

I think it's something to do with not being able to see clearly 100 metres away. One hundred metres seems to be the default distance for safety.

And the people in silver cars who use my driveway on my property [whilst they see people inside our house] to turn around rather than driving to the cul de sac 50m away at the end of my street

If silver cars are hard to see, how would you even notice this?

The thread started in the right path, noting that a specific colour is hard to distinguish against the landscape/road backdrop. One or two comments didn't make it a stereotype. I wouldn't stretch it.

From an owner of a silver car who drives with lights always on (and idiots still pull in front of me when there's no other cars behind me, so why can't they wait?)

Funny thing is, most of the studies done on this show that Silver cars are not more difficult to see. One study (British Medical Journal 2003) indicated people in silver cars are 50% less likely to be seriously injured in a crash.

The Monash University study results:

The result compared white vehicles with all other coloured vehicles. MUARC’s research showed there were a number of colours related to high risk, including:

Black
Blue
Grey
Green
Red
Silver

None of the colours tested were statistically safer than white, though some had equal relative crash risk.

So.. we could blame silver cars....or we could stick with peer reviewed scientific research... and since this is Geekzone....

One last thought... I find those new "high Visibility" red Highway Patrol cars very hard to see compared to the normal white ones.

To the idiot driver behind me waiting at the lights by a railway crossing who beeped me as I didn't want to drive over the tracks as the queue at the lights would have meant my car would be stopped over the tracks, you then proceeded to overtake me on the left hand side while crossing over the train tracks when the lights went green and back into the right hand land... nice driving, I hope you got to your destination a whole 2 seconds faster with that manoeuvre.

His car wasn't grey though, I think it was black. What a chump.

Same happened to me in Mana... I waited at the green lights because going ahead would mean stopping in the middle of the crossing. An idiot came behind, decided to overtake and then he proceed to stop in the middle of the crossing, blocking traffic.

Idiots are idiots.

Bloody annoying too because police wouldn't even worry about ticketing this guy.
