I was on a P1 under lights with my fiancé on Monday and no one would let us in! It was less about being heard or seen, just people not willing to let us cross.

I did wonder if those people thought, what if it is my partner, friend or child they are going to help?

This system would be awesome!

Reckon ambos should be given Humvee's with snowploughs on the front.

Lucky I have eyes and mirrors (unlike most people from what I see daily) because I actually still listen to CDs, and my car has awesome sound-proofing... Right down to the double-glazed windows on everything but the windscreen. I can have a harley next to me at the lights and can't hear it.

But like I said, I have eyes, and being an ex-truck driver, I know how mirrors work, and how often to use them.

I've never held up an emergency services vehicle yet.

PS, back in the day, I actually complained to transport company about a light truck driver using full headphones while driving.... It took months before they decided to do something.

They are generally very distracted and will sit in the fast lane doing 80km/h!

I'm almost sorry to have to ask whether driving with headphones is legal? It would not be in any sane place but this is NZ...

I know of a company that presumably has a "no listening to the radio while driving" policy. As all of their cars have had the factory radios removed. So the staff use headphones with an ipod/cellphone. Or stick a portable worksite radio in the car. So they will definitely have to look away from the road to operate the radio.

Gotta love company safety policies. Thankfully I never had the misfortune of being employed by them.

I recall reading in the new waterview tunnel they will be able to broadcast emergency messages over drivers radio's.

Same as Lyttelton Tunnel. Theres a FM broadcaster blasting down the tunnel with the major stations on the same frequencies as outside the tunnel. Your radio doesn't die. And they can report slow down etc.

Caught me out a few times when someone cuts in and goes 'don't forget to keep a safe following distance, and turn on your park lights'
