Are you sure about that wording?

My understanding is that is illegal to transmit radio waves in that band, which you would have to do if you were jamming a radar.

By my understanding is that the visible spectrum is unlicensed... I believe I can do pretty much what I like in the way of lights (within the restrictions of white to the front, red to the rear, etc traffic laws) and lasers (without causing harm).

Nothing to do with spectrum management From Land Transport Act 1998.

"uses in" "possesses in" So if i put one of those ON my car (e.g the roof or bonnet or maybe a bullbar) it is not illegal as it doesnt reside with in the vehicle itself. Rather than on. How would that stand up in a NZ court if caught? I would see that as a loop hole in the states.

Usually found on the motorway around the CBD with bike cops and near the bridge. You can tell from a mile away they are using lasers, Cop car parked side on..

I was tempted by the whole $10 thing, if nothing but to compare it to my Uniden, but I just can't stand to even waste $10 for a laugh.

There are 2 new detectors out by Uniden in the US, R1 & R3, about $3-400US , the cheaper one does without GPS, but other than that, they are identical (range, filtering). Reports are that they are the new benchmark in regards to sensitivity, beating out the V1 and even the escort redline.

Not sure if they will come to NZ or not.

K band in NZ is pretty much a waste, if you can, turn it off. Speed camera vans use Redflex cameras with a low power radar on K Band, but even the best detectors will only give 1-200m warning, maybe if you are lucky, long after your eyes should have spotted the Hyundai van on the side of the road without ladders on it :)

Only band in use (AFAIK) on patrol cars is 34.7ka band. Detection range depends a lot on conditions (weather, traffic, landscape etc), anything less than about 400m will be a waste, you will most likely get nabbed as the detector goes off (if you are in line of sight, upwards of 1km is still possible to get you).

GPS is a great feature for detectors, if you do leave K Band on (I do) then you can program it to simply not squawk in certain locations (there are a few 24ghz k band alerts in and around Sydenham in Christchurch for example that I lock out).

Nowadays that's a white VW Transporter with a large aerial straight up in the middle of the roof. Haven't seen a Hyundai for quite a while.

Maybe VWs have better heaters? Only seen them on Central Districts roads lately, where there used to be a bright blue Hyundai.

Someone once suggested to me that it might be amusing to sneak up on one of those vans, remove the number plate, put it on your own car, and speed past the van a few times.

I didnt even bother speeding the whole way back, just sat on 95 and i had a train of people following me, I sat on 95 in the LEFT LANE of the overtaking lanes and most didn't even overtake, had the same 5 cars following me the whole way. Seems like people like to follow someone whos steady? I got tired to watching that bloody speedo every 20 seconds to make sure i wasnt creeping over. 2.8 straight six torque for yah.

Since there are now a tolerable amount of passing lanes in the North, there is much less incentive to pass people as soon as possible. Previously, people roared past anyone who was a little slow, out of fear they'd be stuck for 20 minutes. Now it hardly seems worth the hassle. Myself, I can't see the point of getting stressed about passing people most of the time.
Also with the increased traffic, I think a lot of people just can't be bothered passing, as you'll just end up behind another bloody logging truck 50 m further on.

gps by itself is pretty useless as it only work on location of the errant source not the frequency.

if there is a legitimate radar source at the same spot you could be in for a surprise.

Not necessarily, my Uniden locks out frequency at location, rather than just location itself. Possibly some of the cheaper radars with GPS (Whistler and/or Cobra) may operate like this, don't know.

In my current town (Lincoln) there is a 24.1 frequency emitted by the local library, I have this locked out, however, the cop shop is just next door, they often leave their radars on when parked outside. Ka from the car still activates despite the location lockout of the library (the two do battle as I drive down the road, mute the ka band, then the k band gets picked up, but comes out as locked out, it then re-activates the Ka band, which I mute, rinse and repeat).
