I want to know, does he mount the tyre onto the wheel in a nitrogen chamber?

 

Because if you mount the tyre onto the wheel, the tyre will have air in it at 1 bar (14.5 psi), with all the filthy dihydrogen oxide that came from the tyre shop.

 

I want to know how they get rid of all that air and moisture first and foremost.

Your 'Nitrogen filled' tire's actually only 90-something-% pure. In fact the 'nitrogen' they generate themselves in the shop isn't even particularly pure..

After mounting they reduce pressure in the tires, inflating with nitrogen then venting them a few times - they call this 'purging'.

 

Last time my tire place insisted on nitrogen fill with new tires. It's OK by me as it doesn't hurt anything.
In fact I have TPMS units on each wheel and the dry gas theoretically removes moisture from inside the tires (and which sub-zero temps turns to ice).

It took a while as they manually purged each tire - it's usually done by an automated dryer/inflator which I guess was malfuctioning.

 

I had new tires all round – 'cause they were having a sale – plus several bad coffees and a wee nap in their waiting room as it took them for-ev-er to do 10 tires.

Finally they stuck a little sticker by the tire placard that said 'nitrogen filled' & I was free to leave.. and start topping up my tires with air..
