I'll also do a quick reminder of cars in the same or lower rating category..

The most surprising ones @ 3 stars:

Here is an example of how Ancap can be flawed:

My old BMW is a 1 star but based on TSSI data only a chance of 4% of serious injury if crashed and that makes it a safe car. So I get band 4 which is the cheapest for ACC. I've seen crashed E36's that you'd never think were survivable but they were.

No surprise with those vans - your legs are the crumple zone

More surprising the Mustang is that rating - you'd think with the size and weight of the thing and small useful volume, safety would be very easy

Again, a surprise about the Stinger - it's always struck me as a slightly scaled up BRZ, which gets 5 star.  Kia must have designed something wrong

Well this is 3 stars: https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/suzuki/apv/08afcd

This is 4: https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/toyota/hiace/84cee8

Both are forward control cab designs!

Coil:or maybe someone might use it as an offroader.

Go out on any 4WD club trip and you will almost always find a number of SJ413s..  This will be no different

I have done a bit of off roading in my time. Had mates with stripped out Suzuki Jimny's or the Samurai on 30" tires absolutely hiss all over the mighty Turbo Cruisers and Safari's anywhere you go and never get stuck. Really makes you angry when someone in a $1500 offroader just smashes past your $25K beast.

NCAP systems model expected outcomes based on lab tests.

OTOH there's "proven" based on real accident data.  Of course that has to be retrospective as you can't collate accident data for cars that have just been announced/released.  Real data also factors in driver behaviour, which you'd expect might vary depending on the type of car being driven.

https://www.iihs.org/iihs/sr/statusreport/article/52/3/1

There's a big discrepancy between NCAP ratings and real world outcomes.

That report is very interesting reading - thanks.  The correlation between size and death rate is especially stark.  It makes you wonder about the wisdom of putting young people in small, cheap cars for their first few years as new drivers.  But, as you also point out, the death rates also include driver behaviour (and hence experience and attitude) - so cause and effect may become blurred.

But, for a given driver who isn't going to alter his behaviour according to choice of car, NCAP is arguably as good a guide as any.  And as pointed out above - safety is far from the only factor in choosing a vehicle.

It's possibly a reasonable guide to compare safety of different vehicles of the same type.

When you get back to the Suzuki Jimny - there's nothing to really compare it with.

I agree about putting young people in small cheap cars.  That IIHS data doesn't even support the concept that driving something small and generally regarded as being "safe" because of the level of safety equipment - such as a VW Golf - is a very good thing at all (it scores quite poorly - about double the average fatality rate).  Hyundai/Kia don't seem to do very well at all.  Fiat (Panda) managed a 0 (zero) eNCAP score in 2018.

Higher end Stingers get five stars. It's only the entry level variant that gets 3 stars due to lack of accident avoidance features.

This apparently a Wald "Black Bison" conversion coming on the market (they do kits for MB, BMW, Lexus etc).

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

The Jimney might be better for pedestrian safety than a BMW X1:

"2019 WORLD CAR AWARDS
AND NOW THERE IS ONE…..
SUZUKI JIMNY – 2019 WORLD URBAN CAR
New York, April 17, 2019 - For Immediate Release   The Road to the World Car Awards journey concluded today with a grande finale awards ceremony and press conference that opened the New York International Auto Show. The Suzuki Jimny was declared the 2019 World Urban Car.
A Suzuki car has been a “Top Three in the World” finalist in the World Urban Car category for three consecutive years.  This year, the Jimny is also a top three finalist in the World Car Design of the Year category.
Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation said, “We at Suzuki are greatly honoured to receive this award. The Jimny is the one-and-only, compact, authentic offroader, and we have kept true to this concept for almost 50 years. It now has many fans around the world, who enjoy its excellent performance and one-of-a-kind functional design, both on and off-road. We accept this award on behalf of our fans, as well as with pride and confidence in our passion to build exciting cars to be the foot of our customers everyday lives.”
The 2019 World Urban Car winner was chosen from an initial entry list of five cars from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists as announced in Geneva on March 5th.  The 2019 Top Three in the World finalists are: the Hyundai AH2/Santro, the Kia Soul and the Suzuki Jimny.
The World Urban Car award was introduced in 2017 because it's an award whose time has come. World Car Awards Program co-chair, Mike Rutherford, commented,  “Everyday cars in many - perhaps most - parts of the world will have to become smaller if road and parking space is to be found for them in increasingly packed towns and cities whose populations are swelling annually.”
Vehicles were selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of 86 prominent automotive journalists from 24 countries around the world.  Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. The international accounting firm KPMG tabulates the jurors’ ballots."

Wow... the new Jimny won an award!

They're sold out, earliest delivery for any model is next year.

Perhaps this is the 4WD version of the MX5 - that caught Mazda on the hop back in 1989, orders exceeded expectations massively, it took them ages to catch up.
