Battery SoH every time over whistles and bells .

B mode is nice, and I live in Dunedin so get to use it for 50% of every trip!😛
But saying that it only recharges back an extra 2% of my battery going into town - so that's saving me 0.5 KW in power costs at most per recharge.
So realistically I save at most 10c when I recharge the battery because I used B mode :)

Expect you SoH to drop 2-3 points a year regardless of use so factor that in.

Is 88,000 km a lot on a leaf? It's had 929 quick charges... which seems like an awful lot.

It was really only the camera I was interested in for the 'bells and whistles', as previously mentioned my partner isn't overly great at spatial awareness and this may help a lot - but obviously can only get with all the other stuff too.

OK lets look at hard data from flipthefleet which has records for 1800 EV in NZ, most of which are flavours of leafs.

Using the stats of the two cars and comparing with various means inter quartile ranges etc this is what we get.

2013 62k 79% Battery
SOH% Mean 78% 95/100 92% 3/4 86.5% 1/4 73% 5/100 66%
KM Mean 46k 95/100 83K 3/4 57K 1/4 33k 5/100 21k

So system health is about median for a 2013 manufacture year and in the top 25% for km completed.

2016 84k 84% Battery
SOH Mean 90% 95/100 95% 3/4 92% 1/4 88% 5/100 85%
KM Mean 25k 95/100 50.5k 3/4 32k 1/4 17k 5/100 11k

System health in lowest 5% for a 2016 manufacture year and top 5% of km completed

88,000km isn't too bad. The SOH is the most important thing, buy the highest SOH you can afford. My Leaf has done nearly 185,000kms, the EV drivetrain is so reliable that provided the battery is okay, high mileage isn't as big of a deal as it is with ICE cars.

I would go for the 2016 over the 2013, as it'll have the newer battery chemistry which is slightly more tolerant to heat. The number of fast charges isn't a big deal either, fast charging isn't necessarily bad, it's repeated fast charging in a short space of time (which generates heat) that can degrade a battery. I've seen Leafs with thousands of fast charges showing in LeafSpy that still have high SOH.

Both an X or G model will have B mode, but having said that, I previously owned an X model with B mode, and now have an S without, and I don't miss it. It's nice to have, but doesn't really make a huge difference to overall range. I prefer the matte interior and ability to add an aftermarket stereo in my S model.

Another thing I'd consider is that you can expect a fresh import to lose a few % in SOH as it acclimatises to being in NZ. I don't know why this happens, but it's been pretty consistently seen in fresh imports.

84k is more kilometers than 95% of 2016 leafs have done in the flipthefleet database....

And its in the bottom 5% for battery health.

I would pass on the 2016 version

I bought an Alpha (4/5-seater) about a year ago, 2015 Jap Import, 35 K on the clock, for well under your limit. It's great both in town and on long trips fully loaded for holidays, even with a box on the top -- 20 km/L. Just have a good look around. Highly recommended.

As an alternative, there's someone selling an 8 bar 2011 for less than $7k. As this literally only a round town run around then even a 100 km range is more than I need.

Could I get 3 years of running around out of that then give it to my daughter who will have her license by then?

I can only speak for the Toyota Prius 2018 PHEV we bought back in Feb 2020 was a 2018 (new or newish with 2000km on it for a good price). Loving the car!

It gets around 50km + or - on battery - just enough to go into town and back 13km each way a couple times before depleted. For longer trips the petrol engine can get 3L or 4L per 100km.

In the picture I was at 0.4L per 100km with 900+km on the tank. I've had it as low as 0.1L with a few hundred KM on the tank. For the 13,000 km now on the vehicle it is averaging 1.8L per 100km. I am not even really trying to stretch out the battery/fuel economy --- just drive it as i've always driven a vehicle.
