OTOH the situation described by the OP that someone reversing out of park and hits a passing car, I'm gobsmacked that anybody would consider it reasonable that the driver going past was 50% to blame.  Unless there's something much more to the incident than as described.

I've wasted a few minutes trying to find a Disputes Tribunal case that I've quoted in the past but no luck. The search on the DT site is useless. A car reversing out of a supermarket car park was hit by another car that came in through the exit and drove the wrong way around a one way system. The "wrong way" car was at fault.

I was driving the new GR Yaris last week.

It has blindspot detection, lane departure correction etc.

That stuff not on the Yaris Cross ?

Left side A pillar is the cause of most of my slowish speed near accidents, T junction and crossroad type mistakes and lack of observation on my part.

I always thought there was a section in the law along the lines of reversing drivers must always give way but a quick search shows nothing for reversing other than you can’t reverse on a motorway.

TBH I'm beginning to wonder if accidents even exist any more, someones got to be blamed. I have yet to meet someone infallible (even when looking in the mirror...). I believe the phrase is, just occasionally, 'sh!t happens'

Someone has always been at fault, especially with regards to insurance. For cars to hit each other someone has to do something wrong. It can be a complete accident but it doesn't make it without fault.

It is a dangerous blindspot that one. I had a Toyota Alphard with a huge blindspot there that completely obscured the right hand part of pedestrian crossings.

I pretty soon learned to shift my head quite a lot as I approached one in order to check nobody was stepping onto the crossing.

it's not just new cars either, my fiance's 2008 Colt has a huge A pillar blindspot too, coming up to round-abouts I'm moving my head and upper body all over the place trying to get a view of traffic coming from the right, I must look like a madman lol

my car doesn't have this problem (2006 Skyline), but the issue mine has is the driver position is low to the ground (car isn't lowered at all), and my view is often obstructed by bushes that are planted right up to the give way lines because apparently reducing visibility at intersections is how road designers do things. Actually the Colt has the same issue but to a lesser extent as you do sit higher up, but even still there are a few intersections around here with high bushes, I guess they think everyone drives an SUV or huge ute these days

Did those obstructive A pillars get that big because of airbags being fitted and structure integrity if a car rolls?

Think for pedestrian impact safety as well

well the Colt only has 2 front airbags, steering wheel and glovebox area, but my Skyline with thinner a-pillars has 6 airbags including front curtain airbags

I think with the Colt it's more for structural integrity, despite that I really wouldn't want to be in an accident in it to be honest, not that I want to be in an accident in any car but still, this car does not inspire much confidence, if it wasn't free we would not have taken it

Given the complex shapes glass can be made in, would it be feasible to bend the screen where the edges typically are now and continue the glass say 150mm rearward so the pillar was shifted back?

Yes more or less. Seems to offer better blind spot ability.
