Driving through a shopping car park in the left lane, a ute (with tow bar) reversed out of a car park on my right and badly dented the driver and passenger doors.

Did not see it coming because of the windscreen pillar (A-pillar) blind spot.

Worst part was I was test driving in the new car - only one month old. Luckily the dealer took care of the insurance.

The ute was at fault.... just had to provide details on the accident to the dealer for their insurance claim....

You need to watch where you're going in a carpark, not where you've been. If he'd driven past the vehicle as they said then why would you keep driving forward and watch the car beside you?

If a vehicle has their reversing lights on, are you saying "either come to a complete stop and wait for them" Or "continue driving forward and maintain eye contact on the vehicle beside you and ignore where you're travelling?"

Your comment appears to be blaming the victim here.

Perhaps you missed the part about the ute arriving in the Toyota driver's A-pillar blind spot. It's quite a sizeable blind spot in any vehicle to be honest.

The blind spot is quite large and includes the pillar and the wing mirror.

The ute was reversing with its tail end moving in the same direction as I was going.... so not a lot of scenery changing to be noticable...

It all happened so quickly so there was no time to toot...

I would imagine the ute cab also had a blind spot in the back right of the cab... enough to hide the car...

Yes but its also a car park where there are a lot of vehicle movements most notably cars reversing out of car parks.

For the ute to reverse it would have had its reversing lights on, which you could have seen and then taken more care, in case they didn't see you, and it had to cross one lane of traffic (it came from the right) its just doesn't instantly appear there.

You make a statement like you cant concentrate on 2 different things at the same time? maybe you shouldn't be driving if you cant do that, because you routinely have to do this, changing lanes on a motorway, going through a roundabout, the list goes on.

im not blaming the OP at all they were hit by a reversing vehicle and the blame is 100% on the other driver, but there are some things that could have been done to minimize or prevent this from even happening.

A Google search shows that the A-pillar blind spot is a very significant issue with modern cars....

Yaris Cross is a very nice car to drive. I was quite impressed with the various driver assist features. Still a noisy petrol car.

The adaptive cruise control took me by surprise.... was set in a 70k zone and then when in a 50k zone and the car in front turned off the road, the car I was driving sped up again.... a bit to learn.

They're pretty chunky these days which is great in an accident, especially rollovers.

Awkward...

I am not sure how these recall issues relate to the A-pillar blind spot issues.

It is quite common for many new cars to have recalls.

It is good that Toyota is fixing their issues.

I just mean, you were test driving off the lot a new model. And no sooner as they are out now they have to not only fix the panelwork but send back for repair too
