A cyclist that hits another cyclist, or a pedestrian, or even a car, does a lot less damage.

I don't buy into the 'tax cyclists' but it's a point worth keeping in mind given we include an ACC levy based on a vehicle's safety rating in our registrations. It's also led to a lot of cars that are ugly as sin in the last couple of decades so I'm somewhat filthy about it.

Really?  You're upset about cars incorporating safety features that make them look ugly?

Cyclist vs pedestrian is a lot worse than people realise.

Absolutely! A bicycle hitting a pedestrian at 25km/h+ will do serious damage to a pedestrian. There have been examples of this on the Island Bay cycleway.

So what does this prove? A car will still be even worse. The stronger party has an extra responsibility to look out for the weaker one.

It demonstrates that pedestrians are vulnerable to cars and bicycles and should be separated from both.

And scooters and e-scooters and skateboards and dogs.

Cyclist vs pedestrian is a lot worse than people realise. When a car hit sometimes, it's usually with a part that's been designed to a standard that ensures whatever it's hitting (i.e. pedestrians) end up with better outcomes.

There is literally no crash protection or impact safety standards for a bike.

I don't buy into the 'tax cyclists' but it's a point worth keeping in mind given we include an ACC levy based on a vehicle's safety rating in our registrations. It's also led to a lot of cars that are ugly as sin in the last couple of decades so I'm somewhat filthy about it. I've also had some close calls with cycle couriers in the CBD that would have likely been fatal for one or both of us, including one glancing blow when someone decided to just fly through a barnes dance.

Actually the tax thing is easy.

Het rid of fuel/RUC taxes and fees.

Get rid of roading/footpaths from Rates

Add 3K to everyones tax bill (more for businesses), pedestrian, cyclist, motorist all contribute and put that into a central pot exclusively for road/cycle/foot paths

If you stopped businesses being able to claim the GST back on fuel, it could also cover the extra costs from heavy vehicles.

Funding for roads/cycleways can be done on a proportionate amount, more cyclists = more funding for cycleways.

everyone pays equally, everyone benefits equally.

This also gets around the issue of paying GST on top of a tax.

Good suggestion but it belongs in the open tax topic you started.
