A short note of caution for Auckland cyclists - Webworm with David Farrier

Some dipshit has created and event in my hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, which he’ll probably say is a “joke” — but now has 100 confirmed guests, and a lot of them also massive morons.

Which is why I’m writing this.

The Facebook event is called “Liberate The Lane”, and its purpose is to encourage cars to drive down an Auckland bike lane at a specific (busy) time.

So to any cyclists in Auckland, be aware: at least 100 idiots think it’s a fun idea to do this on Sunday from 10am till midday.

“We will use the cycle lane from the corner of Ngapipi Rd & Tamaki Drive, to the start of Quay St, and show what a great surface it is to use.”

Wow. What a bellend. He doesn't sound very intelligent - surely he could have his license revoked on grounds of mental incapacitation?

If anyone gets injured, surely it will be considered premeditated....

He's got some youtube vid trying to justify his view, with comments like "they don't obey the road rules", and "they're inconsiderate".  His other videos are boy racer porn.  The irony IT BURNS!!

It's annoying when cyclists go through red lights, I get that. But when that complaint comes from a car driver, I wonder if that person drives around with their eyes closed cos there's a lot of car drivers doing it too.

David Farrier's linked article sums up the nonsense of the incitement of anti-cyclist feeling.

Apparently there has been an update, claiming its been taken out of context and they never intended any violence to anyone

https://www.webworm.co/p/cyclists

"I never told anyone to drive on the cycle lane, I said we will “use” the cycle lane as in walk on it. This protest is about voicing our concerns of poor government budgeting, poor policing of our roads and poor planning by AT/NZTA. Cyclists being on the road? Great. But abide by the same laws as everyone else. Every single day we see cyclists on Tamaki Drive taking up an entire lane, run red lights and break other road rules."

He's got videos of him burning off on the motorway at high speeds, and his mates cars driving next to him on the wrong side of the road, and <etc etc>.  So it seems like breaking road rules isn't a problem for him really.

His channel here if anyone is interested.  His vids seem not bad actually

EDIT: sorry the link goes to half way through his cycling complaint video.

The backlash smarts!

The mentality behind this needs to change - taking up an entire lane. The road is public space and this person needs to realise it's not reserved as his race track.

I don't know about Tamaki Drive, but I think that in many cases "taking up an entire lane" is completely legitimate.

In my cycling days, I would intentionally move towards the middle of the lane when the lane was narrow with no shoulder, so that cars couldn't overtake without crossing into the next lane. Because the alternative was that they would overtake within the lane when it wasn't safe. If they weren't going to overtake, it wouldn't matter where in the lane I was. If their assessment of the safety of overtaking was different to mine, well, tough shit. It's *my* safety, not yours, that's at stake. And, in the event that someone succumbed to their desperate need to pass even though there wasn't enough room, I would have a bit of space to escape to.

Yepp, cyclists assert your lane when needed.

Yeah but remember silly, roads are exclusively for cars and any other kind of road user doesn’t deserve any space on the road. While we’re at it they should really stop freeloading and pay extra for the privilege of being allowed to use public space we’ve all already paid for.

I think this was just a poor attempt at kneejerk humour from someone  upset by the actions of the idiots on the harbour bridge.

He's just the wrong person to be throwing stones from his glasshouse, based on the guy's background.

There's a lot of these stupid pages/events that go up all the time on FB - most often they are set up by some student or other in an attempt to get 1/2 a minute of internet fame and to be funny.

I can think immediately of a couple of examples - like the Naruto Run at Area 51 (They can't shoot us all, right?) and some low-effort one my teenage sons thought was funny about naked bungy jumps from the harbour bridge during lockdown or some such.
