Batman: Thanks.

Many of them just plug into cig lighter - that means no need to get a specialist install?

Yes for our Y! Dashcam it comes with the complete mounting kit, including the required adhesive windscreen holder with VHB sticky tape, a pretty long Micro USB charger cable so you would route the cable along the top and side of windscreen, down via the door / dashboard and into your cigarette lighter and even comes with a cigarette lighter to USB charger adapter.

In the case of one of our cars, the battery / accessories remained powered on for about 10 mins after the car engine has been switched off to the dashcam will record for that duration before turning itself off upon power being cut to the accessories in the car.

Edit: Fixed typos

Been thinking of heading down this path too....do they not spark more interest from criminals to steal?

Park mode would seem defunct if unit stolen in a smash and grab.

Similarly to radar detectors.....not keen to remove from dash all the time and carry with me and would be looking at a hardwired solution.

I can recommend the Tesla dashcam ... it sees all and even has HAL pop up on screen if people peer through windows .. you  might need to stretch your budget a little though ;-)

I still need the ICE to cover lots of miles in a fixed period of time, go skiing, you know all the co2 generating human activities, even if I have a tesla.

Not really, they're pretty inconspicuous (black camera in a dark car interior through a windscreen).

I've had mine installed now for ~7 yrs. I first installed it when I lived in Dublin and insurance fraud was common with a certain ethnic group. Thankfully I never had the need for any video evidence but it was piece of mind that it was there in the event that I did need it.

A work colleague of mine was not so fortunate. Got caught in an insurance scam involving two other cars. Thankfully he was full insured but the injury claims kept coming in from occupants of the two cars for 4-5 years after the accident. All up the claims totaled more than 250K Euro. It meant his insurance premiums had skyrocketed from 700 Euro a year to over 3,000 Euro a year. He couldn't even shop around for a better deal as no other insurance company would touch him while there were ongoing claims coming in.

My dash cam is hard wired. My car is quite unusual in that the cigarette lighter remains live even when the ignition is switched off and the keys are removed from the ignition. Was easy to find a fuse that was switched with accessories and tap into that for the dash cam.

The other advantage to hardwiring is that in my opinion the setup looks 100x tidier than always having something plugged into the accessory socket. With most of the wiring hidden behind various panels, the only bit of wire you'll probably see is the small portion that comes out up by the camera.
