@handsomedan where do you live? The father in law has just bought a 2019 H2 and is impressed with it and my wife and I just bought the MG ZS EV. Happy to show you the cars if you're nearby?

Interesting to read you've bought the MG EV - how are you finding it? What sort of real-world range are you getting with it? Have you found the screen laggy at all? How do you find the rear leg and boot space?

I took an HS PHEV for a test drive the other week, and was pretty impressed - probably more with the interior finish than the driving refinement. The lack of any towing rating was a deal-breaker for us, though.

i tested the MG ZS EV

impressive car. powerful as heck.

range is very bad. (i heard it doesn't have fast charging either)

screen not laggy. but it's like a poorly implemented android. but it works fine.

capacious leg room everywhere and boot.

We bought a 2 year old Vitara 1.6 non turbo auto 2wd for your budget. Around 5.9 l/100 km. 5 star safety. Rear legroom a bit tight.

The MG has DC fast charging at 50kw with a CCS port?

And it'll do 200km on a charge.

well i was checking out its "power" so maybe that depleted the battery ...

in terms of charging, apparently the real life experience is variable - https://insideevs.com/news/406601/mg-zs-ev-dc-charging-test/

and i thought fast meant over 100?

i didn't see how fast it charged. took it with over 1/2 tank. drove around for 30mins (within legal speed limit mind you) and gave it back with less than 1/4 tank.

had the heater on (it was 5-10 deg C outside), used the bluetooth stereo, probably had the lights on too.

it's the perfect EV urban SUV if it's within one's real life driving range whatever that might be - battery warranty (70%) of 8 years too

50kw is counted as a fast charger, the car has a relatively small battery so 50kw will fill it pretty quickly

edit - checked the charge graph, your pegged at 50kw until about  45-50% then 40kwh ish until 80%, thats fine tbh.

theres very few chargers of higher speed anyhow as yet

Spending an extra $11k to get something like a Vitara Turbo would seem to pay itself back in fuel savings in just over 100,000km... For comparison it makes 103kW, and used 5.9L/100km of 95 Ron.

forking out an extra $11k on a $23k car is a lot just to save fuel

Unless one has limited access to capital, it is the total cost of ownership that is important. I suspect the Vitara turbo would have a lower cost of ownership over say a 100,000km / 7 years. The Suzuki is rated to under 2/3rds of the fuel of the Haval H2. Based the slightly higher real world consumption on both cars, my numbers put the fuel savings at roughly $9300. Nearly all of the extra capital covered in fuel savings. And I suspect the Haval would have poor resale value (especially if petrol is over $3/L).

I'd say as long as you're not too worried about resale you probably can't go far wrong.

The Jolion looks like a significant upgrade on the H2. One option is wait 12 months or so until the Jolion is discounted.

But if buying now, if it was me, I’d opt for a near new Vitara over a new H2. While the H2 has great features on paper, it’s thirsty as hell and I would be worried about the risk of lack of refinement in the engineering of the Haval relative to a Japanese car.

and why is a new haval cheaper than old haval https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/haval/h2/listing/3158246048?bof=ERlePzfa

I can answer that one pretty easily (because I asked the same question) - price drop to clear out the old model before it gets replaced. They were  a few grand more expensive a while back, so those that are selling 2-3 year old models are asking "brand new" money now.

Its actually the lovely cushions on the backseat…

We've had it about a week and done about 140km of around town driving. Still shows 120ish km remaining on range. Boot space and rear leg room seem sufficient for our needs as a mostly around town runabout. My 6ft 2 teenager fits in the back seat fine when I'm in the drivers seat - I'm 6ft. First experience with android auto and it seems to work fine for me. It's a very nippy car, light on the steering and certainly a lot of fun to drive. Range is certainly affected by using the air con but I find the heated seats work well enough. Haven't needed to charge it as yet so will give that a go on the weekend. PM me if you want to pop round and take a look.
