As mentioned by others, the government passed legislation to allow it (cop is a formality right?).

It will be an interesting summer as maori increasingly flex their territorial rights.

How it works in practice??? We don't know yet.

eg, maori are threatening to shutdown Rhythm and Vines.  I'm sure the organisers could give them a little cash to not block the road. Ultimately problems go away with a little money.

Before people start posting racially charged rubbish they do some background regarding the area, its cultural significance, the socio-economic background, land ownership and while you are at it refresh on the Treaty of Waitangi.

Why be a dick about this.

If local iwi dont want you in the area , turn around & go home.
They are trying to protect their extended families from covid .
You are just going for a holiday drive , and possibly bringing Ak's covid outbreak into their region .

A white attitude thats no better than the clowns who refuse to wear masks in Ak supermarkets/shops .

I suggest getting vaccinated might be the best thing for them to do.

They are not certainly not going to keep covid out. Covid has a way of finding unvaccinated populations and wreaking havoc.

If they are that worried just use that energy to get everybody vaccinated in the community.

There has been more than enough of a chance for everybody no matter who you are to get your first jab.

Blocking people out from going somewhere is only going to make some people more determined to go there.

If they can legally stop people that's fine as its law but on the other hand if they legally cant then that needs to be enforced as well.

Enough of the police educating people time to start being police and enforce the law.

Since when are racist comments like this acceptable on Geekzone?

Edit: In fact it’s probably appropriate to lock it before it deteriorates further.

Yall keep making this out to just be about getting the locals vaccinated and ignore the complex mishmash of issues some of which are lack of regional healthcare investment, lack of government true and resources spread out amongst low population density. Hospital's capacity is already running near it's limits and they are quite far aware from the areas that get visited. Now imagine what happens when you add in 10,000's of visitors and consider what even a small outbreak of delta could do

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/northland-iwi-and-dhbs-write-to-jacinda-ardern-requesting-unvaccinated-not-be-allowed-into-tai-tokerau/

4 DHB's have signed on asking to keep single dose and unvaccinated out of Northland

Your holiday is not more important than the health outcomes of the locals

This feels like the exact divide between Maori and everyone else that I thought we as a country were trying to stamp out?

On one hand, they're saying that tourists are desperately needed to help & support local businesses, but on the other hand they're trying to keep everyone out.

If they're serious about protecting their communities, regardless of peoples origins and backgrounds, then the vaccine is the best chance compared to roadblocks.

Roadblocks really only add to the divide between the people of NZ.

For decades the issue regarding the socio economic and health condition of the North has fallen deaf ears. Then when the privileged may not be able to go to a beach then OMG the outcry.

Just to be clear: There are multiple types of "road blocks" flying around by various groups some are talking about closing it off to non-locals, others are talking about ensuring the rules are being adhered to which for the rest of the year are to leave red zones you need to either be double vaccinated or have a negative test within 72 hours.

There is legitimate concern about the boundary checks that have been proposed so far as "random spot checks" and these iwi roadblocks wouldn't be needed if the boundary was being policed like it is today

Dynamic:

One of my favourite Northland campgrounds has been closed for the summer.  Maitai Bay (commonly known as Matai Bay) is 45km east of Kaitaia and is a beautiful spot.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northland-age/news/popular-maitai-bay-closed-for-christmas/BQHTPLJ3F2YYYHGVHKOOH4KH6Q/

The claim is that the campsite can be re-opened once 90% of locals get vaccinated, but I doubt this target will ever be hit in that region.  The local iwi have been weilding increasing influence over that section of DoC land and I would be far from surprised if the camp site never re-opens.  Roadblocks have been set up in pre-COVID times as well which resulted in DoC caving in to demands, but I can't find the news articles on these at present.

The landowners have in the past closed the private road to Maitai Bay due to dangerous driving on the beach. The land surrounding Maitai Bay is privately owned as is the "road" to the campsite and beach.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Sorry but that sounds very simplistic and unrealistic. Surely there will be a physical barrier placed across the road, manned by some large and intimidating people.

What then?

Any particular reason you automatically assumed they would be "large and intimidating" (or "heavies" as someone else posted)?

The key point here is the word "assume". You can assume anything, present the scenario, and ask for a solution. It's a perfectly reasonable scenario that some of us may end up encountering.

You come across a barrier across the road. The road is physically blocked and the "check-post" is manned by large, physically intimidating people. You don't think they have the right to block the road, and having traveled with your family for 3-4 hours up to that point you aren't keen on heading back to Auckland. What are your options? Consider that mobile coverage up north is patchy at best so you may or may not have coverage.
