Thanks for that, points noted... apart from the subtle racial stereotyping. I hope I don't purchase a car from your car dealer client..

I just thought it was part of the kiwi obession, getting a good deal.. No one wants to pay full price for something. It's why our retail stores constantly have 'sales' every week right?

At the end of the day, the car dealer/sales rep will be much more familiar with the art of negoitation than I will ever be and I'm sure they know the limits and wouldn't put forward an offer that would see them lose out. They wouldn't be around for long if they did..

P.S. Not that it's relevant, but I'm not an uber driver :)

An Australian perspective but seems to be applicable here.

Just be aware he has some ‘colourful’ turns of phrase.

Blurtie: ?. ...No one wants to pay full price for something...

You may cal me "noone" then, as I am driving brand new car, I paid full price for. They are also my clients as dozens of other car dealers. Nevertheless, no discounts. They give discounts only for demo versions with some 2k+ mileage and scratches.
Hint: December is a months when you can try official dealerships, look for ex-lease 3 y.o. cars. Your budget looks good for such cars. Usually ex-lease are serviced regularly by official dealer, so you can be sure about service history and regular oil change.

We used this when buying our last car and it works. Not sure how well it works with new cars now when they can't get stock though.

I've learnt that EVERYTHING is negotiable. But if you don't ask and aren't prepared to walk away then indeed you'll be paying full price.

It's a bit like going to Briscoes and buying something that's not on sale. Sure you can do it, but why throw money away?

I'm not sure I'm quite in the same camp.. I wouldn't say everything.. Obviously I don't go to the supermarket or dairy and haggle the price of my shop down.. but with something as substantial as a car - then I don't see any issues with that.

I have got my eye on a few cars from official dealers, so I'm willing to play the game and not feel bad about it..

FYI: New Demo cars are usually have some discount after being Demo for 6 months. Depending on the brand, make and model discount could be substantial. But you need to ask specifically when that 6 month period lapses and possibly put deposit against it.
In case with Demo - you cannot choose color, interior or extras, you would get only what you see.

Re: discounts in supermarkets like Briscous is an ongoing scam IMO. I am surprised it is still allowed as there is a regulation about it but they seemed to find loophole in it... They are inflating sticker prices and regularly drop them by 50-60%. Selling rubbish products if one would ask. I just binned another Oliver branded Teflon frying pan which lasted for 12 months only (advertised to last 10 years). Of course you would not pay 180 for that, even "discounted" price of $90 is way too much for the shitty piece of steel.
---
Re: some things you desire never exist at discounted prices, cars included. E.g. Brand new, hence not inheriting bad Spirit / Karma from some unknown driver, specific color, specific interior, specific add-on features, type of warranty which ONLY comes with brand new cars. For example if you buy cheap EV or Hybrid second hand - your battery won't be covered, vs it could be covered in the new car for 8-10 years etc... You may easily end up with the Leaf with dodgy battery, you would regret buying or with hybrid, you'd have to spend $4000 on the brand new replacement battery....
