Nah, as for all the reasons you listed I cannot see them changing it from a 6 character set.

Oh and if you throw the original question into Google this OIA pops up from 2021

"Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,

What does NZTA intend to do when new vehicle registration plates hit ZZZ999 will the plates move to 7 characters or will the numbers be recycled."

The Answer was

"A move to a 7 alpha/numerical plate would require changes to the Land Transport (motor vehicle registration and licensing) Regulations 2011 see
– [3]r33 and [4]r34 where it’s currently limited to 6 & 5.

As there is currently still an extensive amount of plate combinations available, a review has not yet started to determine our next registration
plate format/series. Closer to the time of the current series concluding the requirements will be reviewed further."

i think plates are usually not issued with the letter 'O' to avoid confusion with zero.

I may be wrong here but I believe back in the day when they started with the current scheme of 3 letters and up to 3 numbers, i.e. beginning with AAA111 probably simetime around the early 2000's, they've stopped using the letters "I" and "O" so as not to confuse it with the numbers 1 and 0 respectively. With that it is also likely why the Oxxnnn series was skipped and it went straight from NZZ999 to PAA1...

And there are a few other combos they didn't use.

I have seen an FUKnnn anywhere.

I did know someone who got issued the plate GAY247 though. Wonder if they'll skip SHT?

A number of three-letter combinations have been skipped, mainly to avoid offence. These include: ARS, ASS, BAD, BAG, BAT, BRA, BUM, BUT, CNT, CUM, CUN, DUM, FAG, FAK, FAT, FCK, FKN, FKQ, FKU, FQM, FQN, FUC, FUK, FUQ, FUZ, HAG, JAP, JEW, KFC, KGB, KKK, KLL, KNT, KUM, LSD, NAZ, NGA, and PEE. Despite possible negative connotations, the FTP and GAY combinations were issued during 2011[6][7] and NGR in 2021.

pchs: I thought this might be a thread about what is next, I.E when is he phase out of numberplates? surely in this electronic world there will be a time when they are not necessary..

Certainty displaying paper registrations, WOF and RUC in cars is pretty much redundant now... with Police and Parking authority's all having real-time information off the numberplate (contradicts above!) sending out little bits of paper in the post seems a waste of resources, I can't think of what having this displayed actually achieves?

Still keep the plates but tie it into the mandatory "LoJack" device for all registered vehicles.

Aussie has already scrapped rego and wof stickers. So why can't we.

Think of all the poor parking wardens whose workload will be slashed by not being able to write tickets (on behalf of their local council) for failing to display current WoF's or current Licence labels etc at $200 a time.

O and I are not used on plates other than personalized ones now. I get O since people keep saying 0 as O when reading things out, but I seems pretty easy to tell from a 1 on the plates, perhaps its people writing it that they're worried about mixing it with an l

Lol at that one being in there!

I know someone who was looking at cars on a yard and didnt want one because of the plate on it. But some of them in the list I dont know why they're there.

I was watching Young Wallander on Netflix last night. I don't know which plates are on the cars - the program is ostensibly set in Malmo but is actually filmed in Latvia so..!

Anyway the plates are the same as we have here - 3 and 3. I wonder what they will do?

Could we simply reverse the order of numbers and letters? eg ABC 123 becomes 123 ABC and then start again?

Makes sense to avoid alphanumeric confusion. I will guess they drop a few more here and there for fear of sounding like a sensitive or rude word and things like that.
