And indeed I am...the low user version.
We are so energy addicted I didn’t even realise there was a low user option!
I’m also interested how getting solar will fit into all of this.

I'm right on the edge of needing to change over, I think I'm about 10% under.
The main reason being that we have a gas hob and hot water. I'd love to change both of those over (especially to an induction hob) but the upfront cost is large and I have nowhere to easily keep a large hot water cylinder. When we change the second car to an EV (hopefully soon) then it'll push us way over.
You could always get a hot water cylinder that sits outside. Also makes it easier to attach a heatpump to it in the future to improve its efficiency.

This is getting off topic a bit, but yes, that would likely be my only option.
I'll miss my infinity gas hot water though. I have the Rinnai control panels where I can set the water temperature (so you do that and then just run your shower mixer as 100% hot), and it'll even run me a bath of a set volume. Gold.
More on topic, I've been pleased with Genesis in general. They've run all sorts of trials with circuit-level energy monitoring and some other stuff that I have been part of.

Perhaps Electric Kiwi (referral link here - get us both $50). The MoveMaster plan gives you one hour of free off-peak power a day (outside the 7-9am and 5-9pm times), and power is tiered approximately full price peak periods, 25% less shoulder periods (9am - 5pm, 9pm - 11pm), and about 50% less 11pm to 7am. If you can use a timer to charge the car that should work out pretty well. I end up paying about 14c/kwh overall.
the outside times are interesting, signed up with your referral - although i did get a error half way through signup process will see what happens
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but what are our best power options in 2025?
I need natural gas so have to stick to the big players. Genesis, Contact, Mercury etc.
Pricing similar overall (half price overnight rate) except Mercury that only offers a stingy 20% off.
Genesis offers ChargeNet pricing at home rates and although I mostly charge at home, cheap road trips would be nice...
Nova doesn't seem to offer an EV plan.
Anyone I've missed? Thoughts and recommendations?
Cheers!
@exador there is no "best" it depends on lots of factors, Address, meter type, controlled or not (ripple), whether you have an EV or solar. Low user or not. Do you have the ability to shift loads or take advantage of free hours of power or night rates.
You ultimately need to know your usage to be able to calculate whats best, and to do that you need to be able to create a spreadsheet to compare day vs night usage then contact the providers to get their best rates (some don't have anything advertised online) and compare.
While free usage appeals to some, it's not always the best deal as the rates outside those hours can be higher, or the daily charge can be inflated or you might not be able to make the most use of those hours etc.

Why would you need to stick to only these? I don’t think I’ve ever had gas from the same provider as our power - it rarely results in the best prices, plus heavily restricts your options and ability to move around. (That said, we do have power with Meridian - on their EV plan - but would look at any and all options when our contract expires. But, as above, the variables are too many to recommend a specific provider…)

A while back you couldnt have separate gas, both needed to be with same provider. Shouldnt apply now but some may require. Mercury at least would offer a Dual Fuel discount and give 15c off a day on the daily rate of gas when you have both elec and gas with them.

Well that's two hours of my life I'll never get back ;) All came out within $20/mth of each other. But only 4 do half price nights (which is when I charge).

Merdian has the lowest regular pricing and are offering 6 mth's free EV charging on signup but you have to e-mail for a quote.
@ jonathan18 - Would you mind sharing their daily/unit rates? Cheers.

Would you mind sharing who does half price nights? Could be useful for others.
I know Octopus Energy does, which we are on currently.

Meridian, Genesis and Contact do, generally under the guise of an EV plan, which some may require you to have to be eligible.

Sure. Meridian, Genesis, Octopus and Contact. Mercury only do 20% off.
I find the Contact free weekends plan to be better for EV charging than most of the EV specific ones tbh.
