i have a related question... I read a bad wheel bearing lasts about 5000km before needing replacement/seizing.

I've driven further than that on mine and the bearing noise while certainly noticeable hasn't gotten any louder in the last 1000km. Does that mean it's not going to seize?   Can I continue driving on it?

Seizing is one option.  Falling off entirely is another.

Both will be incredibly spectacular at highway speeds and potentially lethal to you or others.

Strongly suggest getting it replaced asap.

I'm not spending any more money on it. I've owned the BMW 10 years, engine, suspension everything has been overhauled, cooling system shocks sway bars etc etc.

And while I love it to death I've decided to get a car one that can handle the shit roads up here. Another Subaru.

But i've got clients to see every day within 40km of my home and living in Mangawhai means having to go somewhere like Auckland to look at potential buys.

It's a matter of finding time to look, I've been down to view two Legacies already. Cruise control for me is a must have.

This one in TGA looks good but no Cruise, if I can retrofit it I may go to Tauranga to view. But yeah... nothing local for sale

That's certainly a valid method of replacing the "wheel bearing".

However, there's a good reason wheel bearing issues are instant WOF fails.  They are a significant danger waiting to happen.

I just hope your choice to keep running it does not bite you or other road users around you.

No not at all. I'm all for safety that's one reason I love BMW's and why I'm asking about the noise.

The registration has been on hold for 3yrs, it was off the road getting overhauled. Also I broke the transponder chip during lockdown, it took months to get another key sent from Germany.

I know the car inside out as I've done all the work myself and it's been well maintained.

The last job I had to do was replace the front shocks, and fix a broken oil separator that was spewing 1L of oil per 500km, I fixed it, after water blasting the car to find the leak,

now the trans has gone into fail safe and the ABS pump won't stop running, with the ABS light up means no warrant. I must have corroded the relays.

To top it off, the clearcoat is now peeling too. That was the last straw.

WB $500 is not going to fix the warrant issue, that's why I'm drawing the line.

This far no more..?

I can't be bothered hooking up the laptop with ISTA/P D to find the cause.  WB $500 is not going to fix the warrant issue, that's why I'm drawing the line.

Also valid.  Fully understand cars getting to the uneconomical point of no return.  Having no context/background to your question led to my concerns.

Hope you find a suitable replacement "wheel bearing" (which should totally become the name of the new car) soon.  :-)

Yep I get that.

If I could find another E39 same as mine with 100,000 km I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Mine has 250km, since moving to Northland 6 years ago the conditions have beaten it to death. 35 in summer, salt air dust blah blah.

I edited my post above it was the clearcoat peeling that did it for me. That's a new paint job.

heh up North cars are often used to locate potholes, or in the case of gravel roads after rain - new moon craters.

It's that bad tbh
