Cars with internal combustion engines will still be in demand for at least ten years.

I turn my cars over every five years, with my next one due in 2024. That one will be petrol powered, but in 2029 I would consider electric if proven manufacturers like Hyundai, Mazda or Honda have them available with good supply at a price point $25k below current offerings like the Ioniq 5.

Currently my fuel bill makes up less than 20% of the TCO of my vehicle, so I'm not particularly concerned about it.

I've got a 2022 AWD Kia Sportage Diesel. Purchased it from Giltrap, North Shore Auckland.

It's a nice vehicle! I originally purchased a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but after waiting for a couple of weeks I was told the shipment got delayed and they would only arrive in NZ by June 2023. So that's when I went after another SUV. I've done test drive on Kia, Skoda, Mazda and Peugeot, but ended up enjoying the Kia brand more than the others.

liquidcore: We have a 2020 LX+ 2.0L Petrol and it’s pretty nice to drive. Certainly prefer it over the RAV4 hybrid and standard variants.

Fuel economy isn’t great - in Auckland peak hour driving it’s currently averaging about 9.6L/100km.

This is why I recommend the 1.6T over the 2.0 NA petrol engine. I get about 8.5L/100km in my 2.0 Ecoboost Escape but for that I at least have 190Kw and 390NM to play with

On paper, the rav4 hybrid is way better than the Sportage. (But I was a bit disappointed in the refinement)

After clean car rebates / fees, the rav4 GX hybrid is only $2800 more, than the base sportage, but is AWD and substantially more powerful and more efficient.

But of course they have long waiting lists new, and asking prices in the used market are very high.

9.0L for just 115kW for the base sportage seems excessive these days.

It's my understanding that the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated Hyundai/Kia engine doesn't have stratified injection, which would explain the poor efficiency compared with the 2.4. I would avoid it.

The 1.6T is the way to go.

I wish I understood this SUV obsession. Completely pointless to me. You really need space, get an estate. You really need 4WD, get a Landrover.

Maybe its just because I can't afford anything made this century (almost).

But if you want a 1.6T, get a Cerato ?

You see the road better and don't get blinded at night

Higher driver seat position, better visibility, easier getting in and out, better headroom, more flexible luggage space options (also higher than a wagon), more comfortable ride, go more places, do more things, no hassles going over the ever increasing speed bumps our roading people seem obsessed with.

A lot of which (though maybe not all) IMHO can be negated by winding the seat up or just don't result from being higher, versus using more fuel and weighing more and being less efficient.

I guess, but never had much trouble with our midgets a few decades ago with standard saloons pre isofix thingies.

The previous generation of Sportage had a marginally larger luggage capacity over the Cerato Hatch (466L (Sportage) vs 428L (Cerato)).

The new generation of Sportage is much bigger at 543L

The trade off with the 1.6T in the Cerato, is it's only available in the GT Spec, so you get the 1.6T, but also lowered slightly over the others, and slightly firmer in the suspension.

I drive a Cerato SX with the 2.0L NA 4, drives well, does around 9.0L around town, mid 6's on the open road, fully loaded it does Wellington - Tauranga on just under 2/3 a tank.

The other, more left field option, is a 2nd hand Stinger, a few on Trade Me around the 50,000Km's for around $40k

I guess in that case a Cerato could be designed with more luggage space if they wanted too, just like the Sportage you mentioned, while it would probably be lighter and wouldn't block out the sun so much. Rather have a 1.6 Cerato, thats a bit livelier, not that I drive remotely quickly, but hopefully useful if I miscalculate an overtaking manoeuvre (or similar).

What can say, though, I'm just biased I suppose. Even I am not perfect, just ask the missus...

We mainly want SUV style vehicle, because when we do head out of town, we want to be able to put our gear in the back, and the family dog (and he comes on a lot of our trips). Our Premacy allows this reasonably well, but its getting on, and we are getting the opportunity to be able to afford something very new.

Wife also likes the higher ride height (and it'll be nice to have a vehicle that does not scrape on the drive/speedhumps etc - Premacys sit bloody low)

Aha, but what happens when speed hump manufacturers think arrrgh, all these high SUVs about bounding over our speedhumps, we need to make them bigger, then what, got you now, can't get out of that one...

And you know perfectly well you can go on trips in a standard saloon, just strap the dog to the roofrack 😀
