She'll need to plug it in to the USB-A socket and use Android Auto for that.

Well, as posted on Reddit, apparently charging failures (which may or may not cause the car to brick itself) are User Error and the car simply doing it for your own good.

User error!!  A bit of a cop out on their part.   A bit like Apple's  Antennagate  some years ago when they blamed  users for holding the phone the wrong way causing calls to cut off.  No doubt there will be a MG software update coming soon.

Self bricking is not for your own good. An error message and not charging would be OK, but bricking the car for such a common thing to do is nuts. It's clearly a software bug and MG drivers having to pay for accomodation because they are stranded demonstrates the level of respect MG has for their customers.

Hi, to be fair the manual does state multiple times that the car must be off before any charging operations, it also states that you must wait 10sec after shutting down the car to connect or commence charging (page175 of manual).

That said, so many would not read the manual, the sale's chap we purchased off gave very basic charging instructions, and did not cover the 10sec wait.

Me being me read through the process and all manner of online resources regarding all aspects of the car I could find, but my wife asked simply for a soldiers 5 and off she drove, but I did cover off not wrestling with the CCS connector and to unlock the car and listen for its release, otherwise I knew it would be broken in days.

But, I do agree, the car should not brick itself, i understand if you disconnect the 12V battery for a few minutes and reconnect the car will clear the error and you can carry on without a service tech. That said, there is clearly some firmware improvements to be made.

That is the first page and paragraph of the charging section.

I see your point, but I never wrote the manual. Also a bit disappointing is the quick starter guide does not mention anything relating to the charging process other than the unlock process will release the connector and pause charging for a short period. A bit lame really.

It's useful the correct sequence is explained in the manual, however:
1) A failure mode that renders the vehicle totally inoperable for this sort of issue is just wrong. It's a totally foreseeable event (and in many EVs completely normal so the A/C and infotainment can be used while charging) and should have a more graceful failure mode such as a warning message / chime. Even a limp mode such as reduced charging rate would be far better, or having to turn the car off then on - just don't leave the user stranded wherever they happen to be.
2) RIghtly or wrongly, but a big number of drivers will never read the manual, and it shouldn't result in (1) happening.
3) If there is some obscure reason why the failure mode must be as it is, then there should be a warning to the user that isn't buried deep in the manual - it needs to be in the quick start guide, and printed near the charge port.

Well, great, I'm glad the manual says that. But it's still rubbish. Every other EV that requires you to turn it off before you charge just says 'No' if you forget. They don't brick themselves. And when you do turn them off they've finished doing whatever they need to do during shutdown by the time you've got the door open.

Whether the manual mentions it or not is irrelevant. It is poor design. And if it is something safety critical, it shouldn't be on page 175. It should be on page 1.

Hi @SaltyNZ totally agree, the documentation and education doc considering most buyers will be EV virgins definitely needs improving. For many after 30-50yrs of ICE ownership a bit more vendor education would be good. I, we are techie, so can/want to discover new stuff, not the same for many

Re firmware, yes imagine if plugging in a USB drive on a core router and iOS/Junos bricked it without notice, you would be expecting serious vendor assistance.

Thanks for that. Not quite what I expected based on other cars but at least a solution if it becomes an issue.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these, but the price is a little off-putting right now. It would get around the issue of constantly plugging/unplugging my phone though.

@Dratsab there's a few similiar products on Aliexpress around NZ$75. Might be worth a look.

So, my wife went to drive the ZS this morning and was presented with a Motor Fault. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (twice) with no improvement. When she turned it on with the bonnet open there was a series of hissing sounds, like high pressure fluid - although I did not see any leaks - and some muffled sounds like gears crunching and failing to mesh. She tried putting it in drive and then gently releasing the brake, only for it to roll back (it's on an upward slope in front of the garage).

Called MG, the two truck will be around today. It's got about 3,000km on it so far.

Oh crap, that doesn't sound good. Will be very interested to hear what both the cause and outcome of this are.
