So while we're all discussing bad EVs burning...

House fires have gone up about 300-500 degrees over the last decades due to more flammable things in our house (i.e. cheaper made furniture etc). We still miss to install enough smoke detectors or change the batteries regularly. Some of the the electrical work (from professional installers!) that I have seen in houses is shockingly bad.

I think there's better places to focus our attention to when it comes to fires.

You shouldn't have to worry about smoke alarm batteries because you should be installing 10-year photoelectric smoke detectors which you replace completely when they expire. FENZ Advice.

And you'll find that every place is a correct place to focus attention when it comes to fires.

I can already see this thread turning into a polarised pro-EV vs anti-EV discussion which is sad, i'd rather see it fact-led.

The last "10 year" one I bought lasted 5.5 years before it was bleeping low battery. - the 10 years seems to be a best case situation with it never going off and being totally dust free.

The forced change to photoelectric sucks as they false alarm so much compared to the old one. Spray some flyspray - alarm will go off. Have a steaming bowl of noodles - alarm will go off.

You need to take it back, then. Consumer advice from 2019.

Even so i'd argue that 5 years of life on a $20 asset is still better value than changing a 9V battery every 6-12 months.

This article may be of interest.

Bit of a thread hijack however.

Renaming the emotive and incorrect thread heading would help somewhat.

The new build and major renovation requirements (coming fully into force later this year) call for 10-year devices with networking, and "shall be located in all bedrooms, living spaces, hallways and landings within the building."

Based on the Cavius models, I'll be needing about $900 worth of alarms in my fairly average house.

If you're doing new build, put in a wired solution integrated with a home security solution. Then it's centrally powered and you don't have to worry until you have to deal with the SLA backup battery.

robjg63: Renaming the emotive and incorrect thread heading would help somewhat.

Based on the evidence presented I suggest:

"NZ Electric Vehicle Fires = Zero"

However that's still technically incorrect, as EVs in NZ have caught fire in the general sense.

"EV battery fires" is the pedant description you're after.
