Hey @Linuxluver - I go past the chargers at Greenlane all the time (I live in Ellerslie) and noticed today there were 3 leafs there, at least one (I and assume 2 due to the people swapping in and out of the cars) where car dealers (they had the yellow dealer number plates on them). I assumed they use the charges to save on their own power bills (I think that's cheeky and rude) and recharge quickly but it means they are out of action for anyone else.

Have you seen this much? Particularly as there are lots of car dealers in Greenlane?

I haven't seen this at Greenlane. I have met a couple at the Newmarket (Vector's Gillies Ave substation) fast chargers.

Only one car dealer I know of ("2Cheap") has sold a Nissan LEAF on this part of Great South Road. Renault sell EV's (the Zoe") new and have their own 22kw DC charger on-site.

Autolink is the biggest LEAF vendor in Auckland and they are in Grey Lynn....with many other chargers closer to them.

What probably happens is the dealers pick the cars up from down at the port...and they are typically low-ish on charge as this is the best state for the batteries to be in on long voyages through hot regions. They drive the cars up to an easily accessible fast charger and charge it up. This would be more to save time than to save money. Their site might be too far from the port to be reached on a low battery. Installing a DC fast charger is expensive. The two at McDonalds cost Vector upward of $150K due to having to upgrade the local transformer and its connections and lay the cable underground to the charger site, concrete the pad, put in the crash bars....and then add the two ABB charge units. This kind of cost would be well beyond most Kiwi car dearships, even the big ones.

I suppose if they picked upa number of cars on the same day they might fan out to the surrounding fast chargers to charge them up quickly. There is one on Beach Rd down by the port (charge.net) and two at Newmarket and two more are Greenlane - for Vector. There are four at the bottom of Hobson st (Vector sub-station downtown) but they are often in use through the day by taxi / Uber drivers.

Ngaruawahia. About 180kms on longer trips.

Shame about the maps Going to try out a couple of ideas with a different SD after I have back up the original. I notice all the files on the original disks

are DAT files. I also assume that the operating system is Android but am investigating.

Been driving my new 30kw LEAF for the past couple of days.

The range seems to gravitate toward 210km when I'm doing a mix of highway and city driving.

This photo shows my dash display after 77km of driving that included a run from Greenlane to Torbay via the motorway.

As you can see I have an efficiency rating (without really trying) of just over 13kw / 100km. The 2016 Nissan LEAF with a 30kw battery has about 28kw available for use. So anything under 14kw / 100km will see you with a range over 200km.

As you can see here, my nominal combined (actual already driven, plus estimated remaining) is 209.7km. That's pretty good. It means I stand a reasonable change of being able to drive from Greenlane in Auckland to Whangarei (186km). In the other direction, 208kms to Tauranga would be very marginal, but a 15 min fast charge at the charge.net fast charger in Thames along the way would make it a complete dawdle.

On another matter, can anyone report how many airbags the S spec models come with? So many Japanese imports in the past came with only two, and I'm interested if this continues. Or does it just depend on exactly what the original purchaser ordered? I'd rather not trade off safety for a full NZ-friendly head unit, so ideally want an S spec with a full compliment of airbags!

1. Comment to the photo in the quoted link: that is head unit imported from USA from the guy on ebay who was selling broken (warrranty replaced) units. That means that all of those have some sort of defects in them. Another (not Autolink) dealer bought just one and not many (as Autolink). Which I checked. It was faulty. It had special marking pointing at warranty replacement faulty unit. He sent it back.

The photo on trademe (and I saw it in person at the Autolink) does not have USA rows of buttons.

The ones on the photo (left one) are with the English labels attached. JDM and USA buttons are not compatible and you must have BOTH (USA) rows of left and right buttons for the full functionality to work. Otherwise not all (audio in particular) will work properly.

2. Band expander 0.1 shifter is required for Auckland but not required for Wellington. I have schematics but was not bothered to build one.

3. I have imported before one full set for R&D - head unit with both rows of USA buttons and set up the working bench to test those off the car with GPS and FM antennas, Audio in, Rear Camera in etc . Beware - CAN chips are in different rows in JDM vs USA - that makes them incompatible if you just import one row (some sellers on ebay sell just one).

I have tested USA vs JDM buttons in my Lab on the bench and with one Leaf dealer in the 2013 Leaf (different from Autolink):

Resume: do not buy head unit without original rows of buttons; only buy from wrecked car and not from the dumpster of some dude who got access to warranty replaced ones in USA.

I have a business partner in USA who sometimes buys Leafs for batteries. Can ask for a full Head Unit + 2 rows of buttons to be sent here. GPS maps are not available for Leaf in New Zealand - that is big minus and the main reason I have not imported a bulk load of working units from wrecks. The other reason is that people are not prepared to pay fair price and those working head units are in demand in USA as they have working GPS map, FM, Sat Radio and can be used in any car - not only Leaf for those features to work.

A new black edition of the LEAF - with 30kw battery pack - is being released in the UK. I'm sure we'll see some of these in NZ in year ahead.

I think "black" is more executive type of color. Even Corolla in balck looks a bit "executive".

Black Leafs could be new fashion for CEO / CFO if marketed properly. They should be more expensive and come with a leather trim to add that "luxury".

I'm still amazed they haven't bothered to coat the roof with a couple hundred Watts of solar panelling. I think the integrated household roof ones would look awesome on one of those and allow midday free topups while it's parked up, and extend its range by some margin during daylight driving too. Surely this is a perfect case for PV?

The amount of power produced would be very small. Some models have a solar panel on the rear spoiler to keep the 12v battery topped up (otherwise it charges via the main battery).

There is a crowd-funded solar car called the Sion (from Sono Motors). It's covered in solar panels.
