I don’t want a “high tech” car. I want one that behaves predictably and doesn’t require the driver to be an IT expert.

No no, not at all. Just different people have different needs. For instance, we have friends who have 3 teenage sons who are all 6ft+ and a 20' boat to tow. Hence they have a Landcruiser.
If you read my post you would see that's not me.

I was holding out an olive branch.

So you can do things like ask it to navigate to places and it will do so and keep you safe.

None of it requires being an IT expert.

Oh you know you're getting the best car you can buy in NZ right now, just not what toys it'll have...

I'll assume that's a tongue in cheek comment since you haven't provided your definition of what factors you consider are important when arriving at your conclusion about best.

Your best and my best or anyone's best will be quite different.

It could be any of or a combination of any of the following and then each of these factors will be determined differently by different people.

  • Best value for money

    • Might be cheapest price or the number of options/feature for the price
  • Important or desirable options
  • Best comfort
  • Best economy

    • This might include range or just be absolute cheapest fuel cost
  • Best seating capacity
  • Best towing ability
  • Best warranty
  • Best service and back up.

Right now I think I have the best car in New Zealand for my needs and it's not a Tesla

Likewise I do too - and I'd bet lunch on it that they are not the same vehicle.

i don't understand how Tesla is the most high tech car you can buy today. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Kia, Hyundai, etc all have cars ... they have things like adaptive suspension, real matrix headlights, can unlock & control the car with an app, have self opening and self closing boot, head up display, I'm not so sure about this claim. tested a BMW that can actually drive itself even during a thunderstorm, although it wants you to hold on to the steering wheel. (not sure if it needs a car to follow, it was following a car)

the one feature I'm disappointed that expensive cars don't offer is noise cancelling. must be so easy to implement. road noise on chipseal patches are horrible. maybe Germany don't have chipseal and there is no need to implement for their market.

NZ chip seal is so horrible I think you would need a hovercar.

From my impromptu short test drive I believe the M3 is pretty simple to drive but quite a bit more complicated to get the most out of it. Set up the mirrors and seat before moving off, have the headlights and wipers set to auto. If you can navigate an iPad and select the little car symbol at the bottom to do those, then the right hand stalk for selecting forward or reverse and the left one for indicators and off you go.

Certainly while you are stationary it is easier and more intuitive than the iDrive 7 system in the BMW I drove on the same day. On the move, in an unfamiliar car, the one with physical buttons with universal symbols on them was easier to operate. But once familiar, and there are heaps of YouTube videos on how to operate the Model 3, I don’t believe it would be too difficult. After all , Californians drive them!

These manufacturers have prowess in automotive technology, whereas Tesla is fundamentally a computer company in terms of its design philosophy.

The people who tell me to buy a Tesla are the same computer nerds who criticise me because apparently I bought a computer that doesn't have enough mega-thingies. They really have no idea how normal people live.

If I were going to buy an expensive electric vehicle at the moment I would be going for the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The new Model S & X (which aren't in NZ yet) has active noise cancelling in the head rests.

I've been driving an EV for years and have never found the charging infrastructure unreliable. In all that time, I've only ever come across one charger that didn't work. Out of the two that were there, so it didn't leave me stranded anyway.

My non EV 2019 car has active noise reduction. I don't think it's all that uncommon.
