If I were going to buy an expensive electric vehicle at the moment I would be going for the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

I've seen one in the flesh and it looks quite nice if wide.

When I have to buy a long range EV to replace the aging Ford focus, the model 3 is probably still what I would go for just because there are so many in the country and I'd expect the service part etc to be better.

The super charger option has some appeal but mainly I'm not sure if I want to be one of the few owners in my town with an ionique. I know 5 people with teslas..

Hyundai have excellent customer support, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Tesla, being a tech company, will probably just blame 'user error' whenever something goes wrong.

I quite liked the Ioniq5.

Until I sat in it and then drove it. It is an ultimate example of a soulless ‘appliance’ type family car.

It's a rare occasion that our opinions converge, but on this they do - I too wasn't that impressed with the Ioniq, and certainly wouldn't be paying $72k for the base model let alone $90k for the one I drove.

It'll be interesting to see if the EV6 is a more interesting car to drive.

One week out from the end of the year and we're still no closer to knowing when the Y will make it to NZ, let alone whether they'll have a model under the threshold. I'm keen on ordering now, so look on with jealousy for those who are ordering 3s at the moment, even if they have to wait a few months for delivery.

So why are you in a thread about buying a Model 3 if you find it too techy for you and don't want one?

I've seen 90 year olds buying model 3's I guess some stuff is too hard for some people.

Despite it being the absolutely easiest car to live with. On a day to day basis all you need to do is sit down, put seatbelt on and select gear.

While I’m not suggesting the rebate fund is going to run out, I was just pondering a ‘what if’.

As far as I can tell the “feebate” scheme is due to commence on 1 April 2022. From that date a levy on “polluting” vehicles will be used to fund a rebate on non”polluting” vehicles. So what happens if you have ordered your EV and it is due for delivery in late Feb, early Mar and the (taxpayer) money runs out?

A number of salespeople I have spoken to have rather disingenuously tried the line that “you better get in before the rebate runs out in March”. I have pointed out that the scheme changes at the end of March from taxpayer funded to self funding.

For anyone considering a Model 3 test drive, there is an excellent YouTube video by Andy Slye COMPLETE Tesla Guide for Model 3/Y (can’t link sorry). I wish I had seen it before my test drive as I would have got more out of it.

[Mod edit (JDB): Added that video for you]

Theres an absurd amount of money in the current fund, something enough for 30,000+ evs, which is more evs than we have on the roads at the moment roughly.

And if it looks like running out the gov can always prop it up given they've had to delay the new legislation.

It is likely that the government would simply top out the fund to keep the rebates running until the feebate legislation kicks in.

Awesome! Then I suggest they raise the qualifying limit to $100K to hoover up a few more of the undecideds. Because it is a pita that the M3LR is $82K. Edit: And the MY potentially the same-ish amount.

I'm against a hard cut off but then cars over $80k are pretty spendy theres no practical reason the gov should help buy a long range over a SR

I know we have had this discussion before, but isn’t the aim to get an EV onto the road and an ICE off? And the gst for pretty much every new EV except the MG is more than the subsidy anyway? And there are so many electric options between $80-100K.

Otherwise we are getting to the Soviet ideal of “you can have this Lada, or this Lada”.

Or, as was publicised when the scheme was first announced, it'll be tough luck for those who miss out:

The intention is for the fund not to run out as its role is to make electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles more affordable. Even with the extension to the Clean Car Discount rebate, the fund is not projected to run out. If the rebate funds are exhausted due to demand higher than expected, no rebate will be paid and we will issue a statement if this occurs. Once the scheme restarts, only vehicles registered from the restart date will qualify for a rebate.

About half way down

To be fair though, they did push the start date out by 3 months from when originally announced. So I’m sure they will “be kind” ;-P
