Probably the first bit of semi-good news to come out of this in the last couple of weeks,

If Japan can restore deliveries via the Strait of Hormuz and boost refining capacity this will allow the rebuilding of stockpiles and will go someway to easing the squeeze that has gone on Asian refiners as they all scramble for alternative crude sources...

"Tehran is prepared to allow Japanese-related ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway through which 93% of Japan’s imported crude oil flows, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said in an interview."

More or less exactly what Iran has been saying for a while - if you're not attacking us give us a call to arrange transit of your cargo.

HarmLessSolutions:

Very timely article on the wisdom of changes to the CCD and the reality of them in today's fuel situation.

Well said  "... let’s frame electrification as a cost-of-living argument. An energy security argument. A national resilience argument. Take your pick because electrification addresses all of them."

On a related note I have fallen in love with my new Nissan Ariya, esp the 3 phase charging. Now home charging is real quick as I can easily charge at 10kW (rate of charge) in from excess solar. Can I overdo the smirking ?

And on another related note my wife's 85 year old mum traded her 2008 Corolla with a 1.8l engine (206g/km) in for a new 1.2l Swift (122g/km).

https://www.gaspy.nz/stats.html

I started watching this a couple of days ago, the prices go up during the day.

Diesel is close to doubling it's price.

When did the prices start going up?

I went for a road trip around Northland starting March 7, and I think the prices were just starting to move then?

I remember thinking when we got back, dang, I should have filled up the other car before we left.

Apparently India has transited a number of vessels after agreement with Iran. This was just the start. 1:28 in this video

I read somewhere else Iran asks permitted vessels to travel close to the Iranian shore. Presumably Iran does not need to mine that area.

My whole  installation (house, stand alone  garage) is 3 phase. I have 15kW of inverter capacity

We have heaps of renewables getting built at the moment, but still could do with more. Would rather see the $2.7b go that route, rather than leasing some gear for 15 years. The LNG proposal doesn't solve anything long term.

Indeed, NZ is already at roughly 85% renewable electricity. It can & should get that closer to 100% with more solar panels etc.

Next stop: electrifying the trucking fleet so it's less reliant on geopolitically vulnerable diesel.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

$2.7 billion would buy you 12  130MW solar farms churning out 216Gwh each  or @2592Gwh annually (or around 5% of NZ's current generation)

https://www.meridianenergy.co.nz/news-and-events/meridian-to-proceed-with-227m-ruakaka-solar-farm

Unfortunately, that's only just enough to cover the new 280MW data centre in southland,...

isn’t that new AI data centre only going to use power from the hydro station that was built for the smelter where there is an oversupply of electricity ? That is another can of worms though, seems to be very little benefit to NZ imo, apart from the initial short term one from building it.

If there are going to be new data centres, they should use their own self-contained power sources and refrigerants.

There are a few electric commercial and heavy vehicles getting about but only ones that are working short distances. I don't think the current battery technology weight to capacity works for long haul.

On LinkedIn I saw PakNSave has started a serious looking electric heavy truck in the country. I haven't seen that news anywhere else so far.

It will be very profitable and an export earner for Meridian and its shareholders - that includes you as the NZ government owns 50% and Kiwisaver and other wealth funds own plenty more.
