One factor that comes into consideration especially with jet aircraft when thinking about electric propulsion is how you efficiently convert electric energy to thrust. While some thrust from a turbofan engine comes from the fan blades a significant proportion comes the the jet efflux created due to the expansion that occurs during the combustion process. Prop driven aircraft become very inefficient at the speeds jets operate at so using propellors for this type ofaircraft isn't really an option.

gzt: Free event coming up in Auckland. Registration is required. Looks like it is associated with an exhibition opening. There's mention of a screening that could be boilerplate text leftover from something else.

Motat events: MOTAT presents: Electric Air
.
Following the opening of our latest self-curated exhibition Switch Up Sustainable Solutions, this Aviation Conversation focuses on the technology benefits of short-haul electric aircraft.

Join us in the newly refurbished Aviation Hall as we discover the exciting future landscape of electric air travel with Gary Freedman, founder of Electricair. ElectricAir is a Christchurch start-up that operates the first electric plane in Aotearoa.

Gary and his team believe New Zealand is a no brainer for electric planes, with one of the highest rates of short haul flights per person of any country in the world and an electricity grid powered from predominantly renewable sources. Their mission is to see more owners and operators choosing to go electric and their first aircraft, the Pipistrel Alpha Electro, is paving the way.

This will be a fascinating conversation about the world of electric planes and the future of air travel as we know it.

Anyone going to the MOTAT event tomorrow

Another article, this time on the folly of eVTOL aircraft. You do need to register to read it. It explains why the plethora of companies busting their guts trying to build commercially viable eVTOL vehicles are doomed to failure.

Global warming will reduce this to the point where E-trucks are adequate. At which point global warming will reverse...

A very interesting analysis of Lilium.

Scroll to the last few minutes if you don't have time to watch it all. Very sobering if you have put money into Lilium.

It's my guess there will be more companies that come to this realisation.

Very interesting comments on battery life.

article: By Tecnam’s calculations, even the most optimistic projections, involving slow charge cycles and potential caps on the maximum charge level per cycle, show that storage capacity would fall below 170 watt-hours per kilogram of battery weight. “Only a few hundred flights would drive operators to replace the entire storage unit, with a dramatic increase in direct operating costs due to the reserves for battery replacement prices,”

Tldr; not there yet. Many electric flight startups continue with success. Wisk recently purchased by Boeing and plans to show it's 'production conforming' model at the Paris Airshow in June.

Define success. No one to my knowledge is close to a production commercially operated electric passenger aircraft, much less an autonomous one like Wisk are developing.

Wisk was promising the conforming aircraft last northern autumn. That never happened. I cannot find anything about the Paris airshow.

EV charging is killing your local power transformers

https://mdpi-res.com/d_attachment/energies/energies-15-09023/article_deploy/energies-15-09023.pdf?version=1669710818

Above contains lots of engineering calculations but the oil cooled transformers no longer get a chance to cool down overnight which accelerates the degradation of the winding insulation.  This isn't limited to the US where that report is from.

The calculation for the life expectancy of a transformer includes ambient air temperature.  Throw global warming into that equation.

on sort of that topic, warkworth area recently had power cuts two days in a row with this cold weather. that raises the question of power reliability and the impact on transport if the power goes out.

On the other side of that equation. If we get to the point where you can easily send the car's power back into the house, I'm sure the base model Tesla could power our household for a couple of days.

Power will never be 100% reliable. A general fault or a weather inflicted event will happen. Vehicle hits a transformer, etc. Its up to the car owner to mitigate that or use alternate transport that day

I suspect that an NZ lines company engineer would say that if you're relying on diurnal temperature variations to cool your transformer and keep it within its safe operating temperature range, then you should have upgraded it years ago as it's obviously overloaded.
