Joking aside, I think this is a great thing and I hope it is not just bait and switch. A vehicle like this will appeal to those who might normally turn up their noses at electrics. It could be an important step in making them more acceptable to a wider population.

The thing being it is more just as likely to appeal to urbanites that want to appear to be outdoorsmen. But still being eco-friendly and not have to forego their soy lattes.
In much the same way as certain conventional utes and 4WDs do here.
Likewise, joking aside. It will be a true utility vehicle. Able to tow, carry a family and go a reasonable distance. Even room in the ‘frunk’ for groceries.
Unfortunately too big to fit in most NZ parking spaces or garages. Hence my hope for a Ranger sized offshoot.

The base model starts at $39,974 — and that’s before factoring in tax incentives for electric vehicles. Including those incentives, such as a $7,500 federal tax credit, the Lightning is expected to be one of the least expensive full-size pickups on the market, gas or electric, when it hits the road next year.
Makes you wonder why most EV cars are a huge premium. Yes you have the batteries, but you dont have an expensive engine and transmission, thats replaced by a 20 part electric engine
Wondering if there's some kind of emissions trade-off? For example, is there a requirement that x% of Ford's fleet be below y carbon emissions, or the average emissions be below z% across the fleet, or similar? If so, then maybe selling one EV F150 instead of an ICE F150 might allow Ford to also sell 3 supercharged 5.2-liter V8 Mustangs? In which case, the EV F150 is not really any better for the environment than an ICE F150.

Biden has said he will up Trump's 1.5% annual improvement required in emissions standards , The Obama Administration had a 5% requirement,... Ford are just getting ahead of the curve,

Yes it probably means they can sell more muscle cars (at a higher profit margin) but their overall annual emission standard still has improve
tdgeek:According to a family member who is an electrical design engineer for Ford UK the company is presently 9-10 years behind the game in respect to vehicle technology, and EVs in particular. In this respect it may well be worth their while to take a hit by way of cross subsidisation of EVs by their ICE vehicles in order to drive their foray into new technology.

BMW announce more performance EV's. Great news. Just need a Touring edition now and I am in!
Will be nice to have some EV's with decent interiors and things like HUD.

Doesn't appear to have stopped them getting pretty good reviews for the Mach-E
wellygary:The conversation I had was about 5 years back so predates the Mach-E, though it was probably well advanced in the design phase by then.

I also understand that there has been some collaboration between Ford and Rivian since then so perhaps information flow in both directions...

The Ford plan was clearly to court someone else's more mature tech rather than developing it themselves. I think VW was a contender for a tie-up at some point before the sudden change in direction and the emergence of the Mach E.

How is that clearly Ford’s plan? Who is the someone else and what did they take up?

Rivian
Ford have invested $500m+ into Rivian, but in March 2021 Jim Farley, Ford’s CEO, confirmed there are no plans or initiatives to use Rivian technology in the current or in-development vehicle lineup.
So it’s not Rivian.
So I’m keen to understand what this tech is.
