no its deliberate to stop the manufactures being sued by people who got ticketed for going over the speed limit and blaming the manufacture for having a speedo that under reads.

they read faster on purpose so you cant be going faster than its actually displaying.

Also, really what material difference does 5kmh or so make to anyone?

What is anoying is that the car knows how fast it is going quite accurately. The stability control needs the info to be spot on. In My BMW I was able to code out the diliberate speedo over-read and it is now bang on

objectively you may or may not arrive at your destination any faster (if you miss a 100 carriage train when the ding dongs start to sound 5 seconds before you want to cross the tracks, you most definitely would!)

but there may be may situations of real or perceived urgency that the person cannot control

- need to crap

- in advanced labour

- late for meeting with tyrant boss bcos cat crapped everywhere

- forgot to pick up kid

- forgot to turn off oven

- etc

is it justified? well not for me to decide.

I'd say that is why mine is so close to accurate. Previous owner. Left it out enough to not get tickets.

And that's why all cars should have accurate speedos. So people like me, who are actually doing close to the speed limit, don't get held up by people doing 10k under because their speedo reads under, and they sit on 97 anyway.

On an 8-10 hour drive (jeez, even on a 1.5 hour commute to work) 10kph can make a difference.

Your position appears to be that the road menaces are wilfully malicious. Mine is that they are simply oblivious.

I didn't read it that way at all - I read it is as indicating most drivers are lazy but they sharpen up a degree or two when police are around. When police aren't around normal programming resumes. This would likely also be the case with regular 'recertification' driving tests.

A big problem is that there aren't enough police on the roads to enforce the basics (or much of anything else at present) and when they do actually start enforcing stuff everyone rears up whinges about 'revenue collection', so it's a bit of a lose-lose situation for them really.

Resurrecting this thread with some video from my dash cam.

Taking my new car out for a spin with my sister - breaking in the sub / speakers at the start with a muppet at the end breaking and failing to indicate (causing me to slow):

I see this multiple times every day in Dunedin.

Street ahead is full; lights change and 3-4 cars stream into the intersection blocking it .. lights change with them still in the intersection, causing cars wanting to go through the intersection to be blocked.

What was wrong in the merging optional video? I saw people merging a bit earlier and not giving 3 seconds warning when signally but that is normal . It wasn't quite merging like a zip but people often ignore that guidance. We have intersections where you have to merge like a zip because 'legally' you are not supposed to go. You could always wait 40 minutes for traffic to clear i guess.

The middle video where the vehicle passed on the intersection was very dangerous. Hope you reported that guy.

YOU might wanna watch where you are in regards to the centre line in that second video (right handers after the bridge).

Crossing a line like that is just lazy.

The merging thing is bizarre. I can only assume it happens so poorly because we do not really need to do it that often in NZ.

Anyone who has driven in Europe and had to come down on ramps and merge with 120+ Kmh traffic on a motorway without affecting anyone else or approached roadworks on a 12 lane motorway with 3 lanes closed etc will know that if the Europeans merged like we do here, their traffic would be stationary all day...or they'd die in short order in some horrible accident.

Happens pretty much all day every day at the intersection of Wairau Road and Tristram Ave - short queue areas for the motorway and the cars turning right off Wairau onto Tristram block the slip lane for cars turning left on the next light phase - meaning no one can go anywhere.
