It was a fun drive but after it I am sure I would not get one. I think you can get better value cars for the money you spend and incredible acceleration only goes so far! Plus (and you could get use to it) I found having to delve into the menus for simple things like changing the AC, opening the glove box etc. just a bit OTT for me. But it was a fun drive for 24 hours.

BTW no one really charges past 80% or so unless they need to (or has free charging and time..) Generally you charge to get you home or to the next SC.

I think tesla is working up to allow pinning of any controls to the bar or top of screen, I dont see the point of worrying about the glovebox as its a very infrequently used thing for us. Theres also voice commands that cover pretty much everything the car does too.

The v11 layout and menu is new and different and has some issues...

I suppose that depends on what you mean by "better value for the money". Better value EV? At the moment, I don't think so. It's about $7K more than Nissan want for a new Leaf, but it's far more than $7K better. It's roughly the same price bracket as the Lexus or Mini (depending on trim level you could get the Mini for $8K cheaper) but has a longer range.

I've had a short range EV for 4 years now. It's adequate and can do long trips if you take a relaxed attitude to getting there. But actually second choice after the Tesla would've been the MG, which is about $12K cheaper. More on par with the Leaf but with a bigger, healthier battery.

For me, best value is the Model 3 if budget stretches, or the MG if not. But I get that other people value "I want a Lexus/Mini" more than absolute range.

True even 24 hours is probably not enough time to work out the common function. For example it was only while I was playing with the controls after the long drive that I found out the volume control for the sound was the left knob on the steering wheel!  And then I played around with the right nob and some press turned on the microphone for voice control. I am sure there are many more shortcuts like this.

[EDIT]

Tried out the assisted driving mode on the way back to the rental place while driving on me motorway from Johnsonville to Wellington.  That was a little scary. While I was impressed and okay with the car staying in lane when I flicked the indicator to change lanes and the car moved to the outer lane I was not convinced it was going to straighten up and I had to take over the wheel. Also when driving around bends on the motorway it would actually turn the wheel later into the bend  then I would and that made me feel uncomfortable so it even knows better than what I  would do or my driving has got bad habits :-)

One final comment.  This particular car had an annoying rattle above the glove compartment and there was nothing inside we could locate. I have heard that it's not uncommon for these Model threes to have these  random rattles everywhere and that would drive me crazy if it were my car.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Anybody used the accessory company “Tessories” to kit out their precious? Shows as an NZ company.

I followed a M3 out of the staff car park the other day. While I like the overall look of the car, I thought the taillights let it down a little. Seemed kind of weak compared to other new model cars. I assume it is because of the requirement to have an orange indicator everywhere in the world except North America. I am a little surprised there aren’t any aftermarket ones, but maybe Tesla doesn’t use standard 12V signalling?

Note: Something minor like the taillights would not stop me ordering one.

I have no doubt the Model 3 would blitz my car in a drag race but overall I may not be as impressed as you might think. From what I can tell the torque vectoring AWD system in my car is superior to the Tesla AWD system.

If you are actually curious about what a Model 3 is like to drive, you can schedule a test drive at the store in Auckland.

Thanks, I am curious but I'd only be tyre kicking to compare it with what I drive. I don't see a new car in my future for quite some time yet.

To really see how it goes I'd want to try it over some windy roads that I'm familiar with, like the Awakino Gorge and Mt Messenger. I'm not sure they'd be keen on that idea.

I've ordered a few things from them over the years with no issue. However, they are basically dropshipping from AliExpress so if you want greater variety then you could just go straight to the source

Sure, but you're paying for the fact this guy has personally confirmed both quality and correct fit for NZ Teslas

I don’t have any problem with someone who is willing to import stock from making a bit of money from it. I usually only resort to AliExpress if it can’t be obtained locally or the local price is ridiculous. I’m more than willing to pay a bit more and have the item turn up within a week, rather than wait a couple of months for something “on a slow boat from China”.

In particular things like mats, that Chinese suppliers say must be folded and will be creased. So a local supplier May alleviate that. Does he allow pick-ups?

The good thing about Tesla's is that other than a couple RHD specific items (such as the front mats), things made for a US Tesla, Chinese Tesla or Euro Tesla are all interchangeable.

But yeah, the big benefit of going to a local company is you don't have to wait those long shipping times. I don't believe they do pick-ups tho

If you means hand free then as I posted an update to my account of renting that is the Model three, When I finally worked out how to turn on the assisted driving mode while I was on the Wellington motorway, while I was really comfortable with it staying in lane when I indicated to move to another lane and the car did so, I was far less comfortable that it would correct itself and not hit the barrier! So it's a huge leap of confidence and how good the software is. This is confidence I don't yet have.  And it's not touch-free or hands free because the instructions say keep your hand on the wheel even if it's only a light touch.

Nah, he's talking about the Tesla test driving arrangements, which they describe as 'touchless' - with the page going on to describe as "The new default for a zero-contact experience. Learn more online to prepare for your self-guided appointment." So it's just about reducing contact with people, which they can spin as Covid safety-related but probably has more to do with saving money/minimising the need for humans!
