This morning for example, all but one car were quite happy to remain single file for the duration of the passing lane since there really is no benefit to moving a couple of dozen cars up the line of traffic.
But there's always that one guy.....

Even more confusing was that when the traffic sped up again once we moved onto a full two lane section, he was sitting at about 90 and being passed by everyone again.
*sigh*

And half the time the traffic is crawling because of the merge, if they didn't use the passing lane they wouldn't have to merge and everyone would be through quicker.

That's a completely different issue. It's well proven that vehicles/hour rates increase when passing lanes are closed in heavy traffic. The NZTA often do it up our way on long weekends etc when there is just a constant flow of traffic.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Thats not what they found in Colorado when they started prompting people to use both lanes:

15 percent increase in the volume of cars moving through the work zone and a 50 percent decrease in the length of the line

So they got quite a lot more traffic through using both lanes up until the merge point.

I'm not familiar with the place but do you mean here? It's not specifically marked as a PASSING LANE either with signage or the close dashed line indicating to people to remain in the left lane - I'm pretty sure they're only marked as such in 100km/h zones anyway so it's merely one-into two lane roadway. Convenient for overtaking stopped or slow vehicles but not a passing lane per se.

You know what's embarrassing? Approaching lights where I plan to turn left to get to work in the morning, left hand lane appears empty as does the road shoulder. My stomach drops as I enter the road shoulder to reach the left turn lane and realise I hadn't seen a dark car parked on the side of the road behind the large vehicle in front of me.

I just quickly backed up and reversed into a car park entrance and waited while everyone looks at me as they drive past :/

Car was parked right under that clearway sign, I had to back up to the Mitre10 carpark entrance.

I did get some back - saw that they were still there at 3.15pm on my way back from my son's school so I dutifully called the council ...

I have been in turangi the last week fishing.
Had a tourist in a rental Just glide onto my side of the road and aim for me. Had to go onto the other side of the road to avoid the collision. American... should have taken the buggers keys cause he had driven from Auckland to there and if he couldn’t have figured it out by then he shouldn’t be on our roads.

When I was driving back from Christchurch at the beginning of the week I encountered a car that suddenly appeared behind me and was tailgating me incredibly closely. I was doing the same speed as the cars in front of me. On a small stretch of road he passed us narrowly missing a car in the opposite direction and almost clipped the back of my car all whilst pulling the fingers at all of us driving normally at 90km/h (in what I think was a 80km area mind you also). There was no mobile coverage so couldn't report this driver on the spot but I estimate he passed us at around 140km/h - we never saw him again.

I've got dashcam footage of this however won't post it as it is currently under investigation by the Police - may post it later.

You are still fixating on a 2 lane highway reducing to 1 lane rather than the passing lane 1 into 2 back into 1 situation. Merging well isn't an issue if there is no point in splitting.

1:30am this morning just north of Te Kauwhata in the construction zone.

Posted speed limit is 70kph. I'm going 80.

Guy comes up behind me - about a metre away - and turns on his brights.

So I tapped my brake and drifted down to 70kph....and then to 65kph.....

He turned off the brights and drifted back...so I sped up to 80kph again.

It was a big, shiny new ute. They seem to be the fashionable Tosser-Mobile these days.

I saw a new level of muppetry this weekend. I was stopped at a very recent and serious accident in Havelock. Police had yet to arrive. People who had been on-scene earlier had taken control of traffic and were stopping all traffic from going down SH6 because the overturned car, ambulance and fire truck were all but blocking the road.

Enter the muppet ... who drives very quickly in the right hand lane past all the stopped vehicles, directly toward the accident, honking his horn at people who were clearing debris from the road to get out of the way. Carries on and out of sight. All of this in what is normally a 70kmh area.

There's one heading north out of Balclutha. Just past the bridge, I think there's one heading south too. Heading south out of Timaru maybe. Could just be two lanes rather than a passing lane. I'm sure I'll think of others. I drive all over the place. I can tell you where there are no passing lanes, SH83 onto SH8 (Oamaru to Tarras). I normally get to avoid the tourist roads but that was painful. I was suddenly less annoyed at the rental car's fuel consumption and unleashed its 218kW.

We were recently driving on a hilly road and went around a corner and found a car on the wrong side of the road coming straight at us in the process of passing two cars. I braked heavily and pulled over to the left as far as I could and just managed to avoid a collision.

Now, if I had a movie camera installed and operating, I certainly would have passed the video on to the Police. I'm not sure whether the authorities are authorised to act on videos supplied by the public of dangerous driving incidents, perhaps someone could advise on this?
