when i test drive i would like to feel the seats, if rear passengers are comfortable, how parks in supermarket parks, the road noise, the bumpiness, how much lean it has in corners, how it corners compared to a high performance German ICE, etc

anyway, hoping to test drive the model Y.

but i wonder how I am going to get those feedback with a touchless test drive.

michaelmurfy: I found out last night you can actually schedule test drives in Wellington now also. So taking my partner on one so she can experience a Tesla, but I’m extremely close to ordering likely the long range model (seriously, the premium sound damn it).

I decided to both treat myself and also provide more time for a purchasing decision and rented a Model 3 from Go Rentals for 24 hours. It cost $215 + $50 insurance (to bring down the excess from $5K to $1500).

I took the car from Wellington to Martinborough and back and some city driving.  Got to try the awesome acceleration on some back highway roads in Martinborough ( :-)).

After the drive and some Wellington city driving I ended up with 18% battery so charged it at the Johnsonville Supercharging station. Left the car on the charger for about 20 minutes I think (we dashed into the Countdown) and when we came back it was 75% full and had about 35 minutes to go. We didn't bother to complete it since Go Rental said we only had to return the car with at least 20% charge on it.

Not sure how much the charge cost - looked like about $18 which would be charged to Go Rental's account I guess and charged back to me. That is certainly a game changer since to fill my regular car with 60 litres of 95 is about $140 ish!

It was a fun drive but after it I am sure I would not get one. I think you can get better value cars for the money you spend and incredible acceleration only goes so far! Plus (and you could get use to it) I found having to delve into the menus for simple things like changing the AC, opening the glove box etc. just a bit OTT for me. But it was a fun drive for 24 hours.

Plus I gather a new battery every 8 to 10 years at $22,000 according to a story I read yesterday about a guy in Finland who blew his 2013 Tesla up with dynamite rather than pay that!

In reality you would be better comparing it to a high performance Korean ICE like the Stinger. It is not a luxury model in the brand in anything but price. The S and X are the luxury models.

Have you read the discussion on this on the EV thread? https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=162&topicid=197896&page_no=414#2839894

It's fascinating how many people are referencing this story as representative of Tesla battery life expectancy AND how heartless the company is. I am far from a Tesla fanboi (and, as I've mentioned here previously, I'd personally rather not be planning on buying a Model Y and financially support a man and company I'm not terribly comfortable with), but it certainly is interesting how this story is feeding the common counter-narrative in relation to Tesla. Maybe the fact their boss is such a @#$@#$ doesn't help?!

Stuff have just picked up the story. But only parroted the initial narrative rather than doing some journalism and investigating further. Even if that investigation involved doing a GZ search. Remember, these stories don’t write themselves………

You've interpreted this phrase literally, whereas I understand it's what I've suggested here - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=162&topicid=288285&page_no=36#2841217

Have a look at this video; it seems to explain it in more detail, with I assume the idea being those taking a test drive watch this video to know how to set up/drive the car, as opposed to having a salesperson/tech go over it: https://www.tesla.com/en_IE/support/touchless-test-drive?redirect=no&123=

Nevertheless, regardless of how accurate that story is,if the battery warranty is 8 years then it's not unreasonable to assume that you may need to replace it at your expense at some point after that.

I mean sure, at some point after that period it will expire. Just like at some point after an IC engine warranty expires it too will expire. Like with an IC Engine, the battery in a proper thermally managed EV will last for many hundreds of thousands of kilometers. There is already proof of this.

A 30 year warranty instead of 8 would convince me more...! If there's proof, then they should be fine with that.

The engine warranty in most ICE vehicles are 3-5 years. The engines in most vehicle last much longer than that so by your logic, surely car makers would be fine with increasing the warranty period on their engines as well, no?

It's too bad our Swift didn't have a 30 year warranty. I could kept it and bought the Leaf. I must've just been unlucky.

Nah, he's talking about the Tesla test driving arrangements, which they describe as 'touchless' - with the page going on to describe as "The new default for a zero-contact experience. Learn more online to prepare for your self-guided appointment." So it's just about reducing contact with people, which they can spin as Covid safety-related but probably has more to do with saving money/minimising the need for humans!

OK I see :-(  But I think it's the kind of car that you need a few hours or more to evaluate. Having done that I am now confident I would not buy one. At least  the doubt has gone.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

And ultimately that is what a proper test drive is all about. I have long hankered to have a Mustang, so took one for a test drive recently. It was awful. It did not drive well. It was noisy, jerky and uncomfortable after a short time in the seat. Really the only thing it had going for it was the ‘look at me’ factor. On Route 66 it is probably fine, but for me here and now, nuh-uh. So, as you say, the doubt has gone.

I let myself down a little by doing my Model 3 test drive as a spur of the moment thing. I should really have done some research about how to operate one properly, because part of the drive was taken up learning on the fly rather than evaluating the vehicle. Once you are aware, it seems dead simple to operate. I guess the flip side of that is how easy a car is to just get in and drive. From that perspective the Leaf, Kona, Niro and Ioniq5 have been easier.

I have arranged to try a Polestar 2 later this month, so I might try to take a M3 out on the same day to compare.
