As for my Tesla bias, it seems thats caused GM to recall every other bolt made now, I apologize completely, hopefully they dont find the real reason (me) as its another $1bn cost...

Thoughts -
Looks like a blob, which is a shame as the concept and show car were real lookers.
Nailed it with the interior sans megascreen, looks like performance/spec etc is well on point (Its not sporty quick but I assume there will be a killer AMG model later..)
Its good to have an actual luxury wafter saloon (which the S isnt). tbh wish it had been out a couple years already.

I'll never own one but then I wouldnt be buying an S class either lol..

And in case you were in any doubt, Polestar is coming to NZ, via the Giltrap Group, sold online etc.

No word on pricing, or dates etc.

I like it. Reckon this would be my next car (or the Polestar 2 which also looks really great). Be interesting to see where the pricing ends up on the Model Y - rumour suggest it's only like to be $5k above the Model 3.

TBH if the Model Y had been available when I car shopped two months ago, I'd have bought it. Just really value the practicality of the hatch opening vs the sedan, although I did love driving the Model 3.

Model Y would be around 10% more at the same spec level as the model 3.

So:
SR - $73,900
LR - $94,900
Perf - $105,900

Or there about. (also note the Y SR has the full premium interior..)

I think we'll see orders open next month or perhaps the month after for deliveries later (Nov on), though this could push into next year esp if we carry on having delta/covid issues.

I think the real problem at the moment is the NZ based delivery team is swamped already

Electrek.co: Tesla claims its battery packs lose only ~10% capacity after 200,000 miles

n the latest news released as part of its impact report, Tesla claims that its battery packs lose only about 10% of their energy capacity after 200,000 miles.

Battery degradation, which represents the loss in capacity and range over time with increasing mileage, is one of the biggest concerns of new electric vehicle buyers.

It’s also an important part of the equation to make electric cars more sustainable.

The longer a battery pack can be in operation, the longer it will keep itself from being scrapped for recycling and the longer it can keep the whole car in operation.

Tesla has sporadically released some data about its battery degradation over the years.

This year, it updated stats from its Model S and Model X fleet, and it claims a battery capacity retention of roughly 90% after 200,000 miles

With a longer range car it would be much easier to get more life out of the battery.  If I was driving a car with a decent range (Model 3, 64kWh Kona, etc) then I could charge it to 75% each night and my commute would not take it below 45%.  That car would therefore only occasionally have a SOH above 75% or below 45% - this would greatly increase the number of cycles that it would last for.

Here's an informative video on the subject: https://youtu.be/Yf9N9zBgyB8

It will be interesting to see what happens with new technology over the next few years, like solid state batteries for example.

I hope we get decent solid state cells soon but there are issues with all of them for now (or they'd be in volume production).

People seem to think they'll solve everything, right now they dont. They either have cycle issues or temperature issues or energy density issues or cant be mass produced etc.

I'm sure that lot will eventually be solved but we absolutely dont need them for an EV revolution.

But saying we must await solid state batteries us a popular cry for anti ev brigade.

Along with the needing to drive without stopping from auckland to Wellington while pulling 20 ft boat..

Literally anything to avoid having to make changes even if its for the better.

Stuff story today about a whole lot of fossil cars running their batteries flat waiting for Covid tests.

The waiting sucks yes but what happened to the arguments EVs would go flat in heavy traffic queues??

I find the wailing and gnashing of teeth about EVs and what they can and can't do quite humourous.

One of my friends is convinced he could never own an EV as it can't do Auckland to Wellington non stop. But nor can he as he has the smallest bladder in the world, and in any case this is a trip he's made precisely once in the 15 years he's been driving.

But his day to day and week to week use? Absolutely no problem for an EV, even a not-that-great one like a gen 1 Leaf.

An EV is not the perfect vehicle for everyone, but in fairness nor are a number of the other cars currently available. Luckily there's more than one make & model of car available in NZ.
