The above article is headed:

"Dashcam footage reveals rental car's close miss while overtaking another car in Queenstown."

The good thing about this article is that:

A police spokeswoman confirmed this morning they had received a complaint about the car yesterday.

"We are making inquiries to identify the driver," she said.

This answers the question in my previous post which asked whether the Police would be prepared to take action based on dashcam evidence of dangerous driving. This goes to show that a dashcam is becoming an important addition to your car.

It's the other way around generally. They can/will - but a big but with it.

Person with it has to be willing to a, submit it as an official complaint charge (visit a police station) if not serious enough the police follow a line to do so themselves b, stand up in court and give evidence should the person charged wish to take it that far.

Vs the phone/online complaint form which isn't an 'official charge'

The Community Roadwatch programme has been designed for use by New Zealand Police to advise the owner of a motor vehicle about the unsafe or risky driving behaviour you have observed and reported where you do not wish the offender to be prosecuted.

If you wish the incident to be investigated with a view to charges being laid in Court you must lodge a formal complaint with your nearest police station

I've had a dash cam in my car now for just over 2 years. It would be the first accessory I would install into any new car that I buy in the future. I lived in Ireland where insurance companies will find any reason not to cover you so it was for piece of mind. Insurance fraud was a real possibility, two of my friends were victims of fraudulent claims. The first had a car cut in front on a roundabout and then slam on the brakes and the second was stationary at an intersection when the car in front reversed into her.

Touch wood, apart from the common red light runner or late lane change I haven't captured anything serious but I know its there just in case.

Nearly got collected this morning while crossing on a green cross signal by a person on a bicycle overtaking a line of buses stopped at the traffic lights.

Let's add that up: -

1) Overtaking on (literally on) double yellow lines

2) Running a red light

3) Cycling down a bus lane (illegal on that street at that time of day)

Perhaps they could argue that by cycling down the centre of the double yellow lines they were not actually in either bus lane

It's a weekly occurrence for me to see cyclists running red light at this intersection (Victoria and Manners). So I was trying to 'pedestrian defensively', I didn't see the bike because it was obstructed by the buses it was overtaking. So that's a new variation of two wheel muppetry to look out for ...

Cyclists running red lights is nothing new. Try and call them out on Twitter for example and be prepared for a barrage of insults that will make you think cyclists have priority over pedestrians.

I wished I had side facing cameras sometimes. Late Jan/Early Feb I come across a car on a major trunk doing the ol lane dodge while turning into a multilane (one of the lesser known rental companies.. not many distinct stickers other than a plate surround)

Phamplets heh. The phamplets in question, were clearly seen, even I could understand them. However only because they were facing me when alongside - jammed into both the DRIVER and passenger windows to block the searing sun that day. Could they see out the side window without ducking or moving their head? nope.

I stop BEFORE the line when there's no space in front of. I always think this would be a hint for the driver behind me, but happens when I move ahead? The idiots behind me move too and stop dead in the middle of pedestrian crossings.

This also happens in clearways road markings - there's one in front of the Wellington Free Ambulance station in Johnsonville. I stop before that if there's no space in front... As soon as I move an idiot will come and stop on top of the markings.

The markings exist in case an ambulance need to leave and cross the road to the other side. But it seems some drivers are too dumb.

Likewise here in a few places (papanui rd, cranford st)

The entire roundabout before lights went in at riccarton rd/deans was yellow hatched to stop the retardation of going around the roundabout and jamming it up so you don't miss your slot in the queue of traffic.. 90% of the time it was jammed up with cars sitting on the yellow.

NZ drivers don't get hints, subtle or otherwise. There can be oodles of cars streaming past some muppet doing 85km/h in the right lane on the motorway and the cretins just don't pay it any mind whatsoever.

This is my biggest pet hate currently - may just be getting old.

People on the motorway who pull out on the lane going towards Porirua as it often has less traffic then slow down not caring who is behind them looking for a gap and suddenly brake and merge back in with the queue going to The Hutt. This guy today suddenly pulled out in front of me (causing me to brake suddenly along with the cars following behind me) and then forced themselves back causing a few drivers to honk their horns (including me as he slammed on his brakes). I always keep a distance but this is bloody scary and dangerous at times as you've often got very little warning.

The Wellington Council is spending a ton of our money installing cycleways on the Hutt Road and cyclists still insist on riding on the road. That makes me really angry but I don't do Twitter so I really don't have an avenue to vent.

Ahh, this happens all over the country I think.

I drive my daughter to swimming at 5.30in the morning, driving back at 7.30am.... 2 lanes, left lane is always faster . Nearly every day I see people zooming up as far as they can go in the left lane, then jumping into the right lane before the lanes split.

They are the equivalent of queue jumpers, and it really irritates me. If everyone did this it would be chaos.

Yep it's generally true of Auckland motorways that the left lane is fastest. Shouldn't be so, but because the lemmings are always throwing themselves into the centre and right lanes, the left lane, despite merging on-ramps, is fastest.

It's not the fault of the left lane users. If they are already in the left lane (I usually am there by default) they have every right to proceed along it until merging. What pisses me off is muppets hanging around in the other lanes, then ducking left and undertaking then ducking back into the right lane again.

Just gotta take a deep breath and let it slide off me.

Queue jumping is a pest. Not only is it an anti-social but it stagnates traffic flow and creates potentially dangerous situations.

In Auckland I see this behaviour all the time on certain exit slip roads, a common one being Green Lane East going south.

Many drivers act as if they are going to leave the motorway and follow that exit lane more than 1k before jumping back on into standstill traffic just so they can pass a couple of hundred cars.

When I see it happening in front of me I usually hit my horn to let them know it's not appreciated
