I note in a few videos, owners of the Model 3 talking about “phantom braking”, where the car effectively jumps at shadows. It would appear to be worse in the latest iteration since they removed the radar from the vehicle and rely solely on optical sensors. Anybody here experienced it? Particularly the latest batch to arrive (sans sensor)?

Only ever when Adaptive Cruise Control is turned on. Never without it. Even then, you just gently touch the accelerator and it's fine

Have a three month old model 3 and never experienced it. Have done 3000k’s on it. Possibly
because we don’t have FSD so autopilot is only for motor ways here.

It's more of a problem on the new US-made vehicles that are using just the cameras and no radar. Tesla was forced to move to vision only a little earlier than they had expected with the chip shortages and they haven't got things perfect with it yet. The FSB beta is also vision only had suffered from the same problem but the recent releases have been reported to be substantially better, so I imagine they'll merge that particular improvement into the public branch in the near future.

For cars in NZ that come from the Shanghai factory, they still have the radar module and aren't using vision only at this stage. That could change between now and when you get your car but the software improvement should hopefully be in by then.

When I first got my car it was quite twitchy on the open roads, pumping the brake for the ocassional oncoming vehicle and especially at left-swinging corners if a larger vehicle was coming around. These days its really not an issue now. I've done a few trips between Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown and I can mostly go the whole way on Autopilot now - I take over for the areas with sharp corners.

Vision only is supposed to solve phantom braking tbh, as its odd stuff the radar throws up without context that causes it.

Not really experienced it myself

Vision only is definitely having some widespread phantom braking issues based on the many reports of it on Reddit.

I noticed a large increase in the phantom braking when using cruise control mode and going past large stands of trees that cast shadows onto the road ahead, particularly in the brightest part of the day.

New full set of tyres today! After 46k km on the OEM set, I figured I'd keep the same since they did well. Of course, only Beaurepaires actually had stock and of course, they were the most expensive that would stock them (Michelin Pilot Sport 4 with the TO spec for the foam inner). Mag & Turbo and Hyperdrive were quoting a few hundred cheaper for a full set but wouldn't be able to get stock until the end of Feb at the earliest. Ended up spending $2100 fitted.

So: order new rubber before you have to have it... Gotcha.

Basically, yes. Don't wait until you need them...if you want the OEM "TO" versions at least. Compared to a BMW 3 series, I've still saved around $7.2k in fuel so I'm still winning 🙂

Mine came with Hankook. Presume they are similar in price? Interesting to see if they are any better RE availability. These are the 19’s.

Mine were 18s on my Long Range Performance (Stealth). I'm assuming your Hankooks have a similar "TO" spec on the side of them?

A US based owners site that I frequent has a lot of posts about the Continentals with the foam liners going out of balance as the foam in their tyres has come loose. Perhaps the Michelin version is better.

Got a set of 4 Pilot Sports 4 S ready to be fitted $2000 all up. How did you rate the Sport 4?

Well, they never did me wrong and survived a long life so to me they were great. Since I've never driven the car with a different tyre and I haven't driven with the tyres on a different car, I'm not skilled enough to determine what performance capability is from the car vs the tyres.

When I travelled down from Auckland, I have some significant issues with phantom braking with most of the issues due to large trucks and right turning lanes; locally around Dunedin there are two overpasses that the shadows will cause issues with - I have now learnt generally what causes the car to have issues and can plan around them.

It also will deactivate cruise if the crest on piece of road is high enough
